This news dropped pretty randomly yesterday. Bit surprising. You'd think some entity like Warner Brothers or Amazon would have been the one to gobble up the Lord of the Rings property.

For those unfamiliar Embracer Group is this mutant holding corp that has been absorbing tons of video game developers and IPs the past decade.

No info on what the acquisition cost but I bet it was more than a 100 USD.

Would have thought it would make for much bigger headlines.

I think it's because Embracer group is such an unknown. It's an amorphous blob of money that's snowballing it's way around the video game and entertainment industry.

A decade from now it'll have eaten all companies in the world and declare it's now going to travel to the stars to search for more companies to acquire.

Sounds like an appropriate name then.

Who knew the entire world economy was called "George"?

As well as matching rights in other Middle-earth-related literary works authorized by the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins, which have yet to be explored.

This is the only part that interests me. This means the Tolkien Estate and Harper Collins retain the rights to Tolkiens written word, and the portion of it that applies to this holding company purchase is only anything "authorized" by them, and not the works themselves.

You should modify the title apt, as it makes it seem like this company will be responsible for Tolkiens' actual work VS just IP literary abilities.

'Embracer has made it clear it’s going to exploit the hell out of its new precious. [...] “Other opportunities include exploring additional movies based on iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, Eowyn and other characters from the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and continu[ing] to provide new opportunities for fans to explore this fictive world through merchandising and other experiences.” [...] Embracer can start dispensing them like a giant T-shirt cannon at a football game, meaning we could get anything from Éomer socks to, precious forbid, Éomer NFTs.'

Whatever happened to predictability?
The balrog, Gil-Galad, Samwise Gamgee…
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

It's an interesting deal. When the Saul Zaentz Company put the rights up for sale, they were asking for $2 billion because they said the LotR movie rights had reverted to them. Warner Brothers said they had not, because of the animated movie they'd put into production the year before. The fact that the SZC ended up selling the rights for less than $700 million suggests that WB may have won that argument. However, Embracer are being bullish in that they can make additional films, which WB will likely heavily contest.
