I don't know how many people have read him but he isn't to bad. The story is about the life Julius Ceasar. Quite interesting read. Any thoughts?

Yeah I've read them all so far and they are really good. Obviously it is a story rather than being entirely accurate but as long as you realise that then they are good fun. Certainly interesting enough to make me want to buy some real history books and find out more about that period in history.

His writing style isn't too complicated so makes for an easy read (perfect for commuting to work)

I've read the first two. I would have read the third except Hedge bought an edition that was too large to steal! They're entertaining and although the author took a lot of artistic license, they're bizarrely helping me keep track in the Rome series on the BBC at the moment!

I read the first one but as a Roman history buff, I couldn't stand the historical inaccuracy. I know he's just doing his own story but it made my teeth hurt.

If you want series on Julius Caesar, I heartily recommend Colleen McCullough "Masters of Rome" series. Best damn novels I've ever read about Rome. Period.

Someone else recommended that series. I will check it out after a Feast for Crows. I love Roman history.

Well said that man. Although I Claudius is the best post-Caesar Roman novel.

I enjoyed Colleen McCullough first master of rome book very much need to find time and also money to get the rest of the series. Also I move for a vote to get Bernard Cornwell to write a roman history series, would be great.

I got my brother the "Gates of Rome" and "Field of Swords" series for his birthday - at least the first two. I think I shall read them afterwards... are they the Emperor ones?

Slightly off-topic, anyone checking out the HBO/BBC co-prod of "Rome" (epic miniseries aout Pomeius and Caesar, yadda yadda). It's very cool.

Yeah, I've been watching it. Very good stuff. Very historically accurate.

Those comments are hilarious. Yes, cutting up ep 1-3 into 2 eps was a bad idea (all the more reason to download the stuff ;) ), but some of these people are offended by the ' pornography' . What an old fashioned doofuses.

The season finale for "Rome" was fantastic.

But damnit, now we have to wait a couple of years until the next season!

The first couple of episodes of Rome on the BBC were a bit confusing I have to say. It's getting better now though. Although I can't work out if I'm watching it because it's good or because I like the gratuitous Mark Anthony nudity scenes. Me, crass? Never

Thats because the idiot Britons decided to " merge" (or, in less euphemistic words, carelessly butchet and Frankstein-stitch the cuts together) HBO's episode 1,2 & 3 into BBC episode 1 & 2.

And indeed, the season finaly was chilling. Goose-bumps.

Rome had a ludicrously poor opening episode (whether or not it was down to the editing is unclear at the moment) but it's gotten better with each episode since then. The great thing about the Fall of the Republic/Rise of the Empire (whoever said George Lucas was original?) era is that is so ripe for dramatisation. My only gripe is that they could have started it earlier with the Sulla/Marius conflict and the rise of Julius Caesar. Now we've got Caesar/Pompey and the rise of Octavian aka Augustus. So that makes next series Augustus/Antony and the final death throes of the Republic. And of course if they go forward from there, they could simply dust off I, Claudius and cover the Caligula/Claudius period (but who will they find to match Derek Jacobi as Claudius?).

Recently finished the last part of the Iggulden series. Rounded up nicely.

I find this series to be among the best historical fiction series I've read. Can't wait until the fourth and final book which should be really good due to the period it describes :).

Iggulden is definatelly a writer for the future.

About historical accuracy. Since this is fiction then it's natural that certain events are tailored to fit the story rather than the opposite. After all he does describe what really happened in the appendix.

Also. Many parts of this book is simply speculation, which is ok to do when it's called just that. After all. Most of what we know about this period is second hand/third hand notes. Who knows how much was fiction in Suetonius accounts?

In fact I think there's too little of this type of litterature, fantasy is nice but the real history is so fantastic in itself - without need for supernatural items.

I'd love to see a similar series about Genghis Khan, or why not Cyrus, Darius?
