Chapter 1....yeah I forgot how cool this band of Malazans are...Stillwater is a laughriot (and cool as fuck...a witches burial eye shroud, worn as a scarf to cover up her Rope tattoo, and it still has the death eye goop on it? Like I can see the art)...and Oams is so mater-of-fact...and Blanket...well....Like I kind of recall thinking it would be hard for Steve to match the coolness of the BB's and the BH's...but he's done it.

I LOVE THIS BOOK.

This chapter is so good i just listened to it twice.... the entire progression, from Benger recruiting Still and Anyx to help him ("Because you have tits and stuff") to the flashes of Salys' inner monologue, then the ritual, the river, the otataral 'sun' and Still and Anyx going stone cold practical when zoned out Benger says 'Dragon', then jumping in themselves just as his summons frikkin Rake, all of them freaking out BUT then Still again, stone cold calm, chatting w Rake like it's just another Tuesday... AND THEN a vengeful army of spirits shows up, Still loses her scarf, her scarf saves her, Anyx unloads a fucktonne of Thyr while repeatedly stabbing a Jaghut in the head and oh my god the narrator just kills this part from Salys' pov of Anyx's squeeky voice shrieking 'fuckyoufuckyoufuckyou' with every stab right down to the revelation Benger checked out on purpose because he knew Stilwater would deal with all of it better than he could.

Chef's kiss, 10 headstabs out of 10.

I really did forget just how much of a top tier Malazan book this is.

I've had a couple of busy nights so behind now on the reread. Just got up to chapter 10.

Everything about the Warlock scene is glorious...

The Heavies numbering the townsfolk is comedy gold... and then Spindle's conversion with Monkrat, the feels man... especially when he talks about the tunnels at Pale...

Just scene after scene in this book.

Stillwater going hunting mages in Balk's camp and ending up jumping between Meanas and the real world dodging knives, Hounds, warlocks, arrows.

The Jheck d'ivers veering to protect Rant from the Teblor hounds.


Benger just wrecking the assassins sent after him even after being dosed with otataral.


The Serc mages annihilating the wilders.


The first time the Marines try to rescue the Teblor from the flood, and then when Stillwater's squad does the same.


Stillwater's chat w Cotillion, and his follow up w Shadowthrone.


Rant saving Spindle.


Spindle using his warren on the horses and just hating himself for it.


The scene after the flood where Skant dares Capt Gruff to 'speak Heavy' and he does and it brings tears to Skant's eyes.




....yeah, this book is GLORIOUS and i am so so psyched to start NLF tonight.
