Is there a chance that Erikson, being the archaeologist and (presumed as a corollary) history buff somehow has absorbed by osmosis some of the guff that the military had honour back in the day because all we have is the mythos from ancient Greece etc?

Historian Rutger Bregman has some opinions about this. He's written a lot about this too, see for instance his books Humankind and Utopia for Realists. Most of his earlier writing might be in his native Dutch, but these are in English, as is this short youtube interview.

Reminds me of John Green's bit on this, where he compares the Greek writings about their "honour-based" wars to the way we currently talk about wars and how we still make up "honourable" reasons to go to war "It's not like today the President goes on TV and says we're declaring war because we need their resources!"

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.
