Prologues timing is usually irrelevant to the timing of the main story. We've had prologues hundreds of thousands of years before the books setting

This prologue has Dayliss in it.

From this we can infer that Dayliss clearly is an ascendant.

Could be wrong but the legs look hinged backward and the fingers look too long... any ascended Assail unaccounted for?

https://malazan.fand...om/wiki/Dayliss God bless Egwene :-)

Maybe Dayliss is the new Queen of Chains, probably seriously pissed off at Karsa.

Red hair, dark bird wings, dour expression -- it's Dark Sansa.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

It's a fun book, though a bit oddball. It's Erikson's shortest Malazan novel to date (473 pages) and the story is focused almost entirely on two concentrated plot threads taking place a constrained geographical area. It does feel like Erikson has tried to go accessible for this one, at least by his previous standards.

Rereading Book One of House of Chains may be a good idea, because although Karsa doesn't show up, a lot of the other characters and locations from that arc do. And you'll definitely want to be up to date on the status of the Empire after Return of the Crimson Guard and Stonewielder (and maybe Orb Sceptre Throne).

Since it takes place on Genabackis, I assume it finally has maps of Stratem and Umryg? /s

I like this, sounds like the length and density of the Path of Ascendancy books, which are like bite-sized Malazan Chunklets. Can't wait to read it!

Chapters/Indigo has it as Aug 31st.

So the question is get it on Jul 1st from the UK and pay the shipping costs, or wait 2 months and get it from Indigo.

I just pre-ordered from the UK. Let's boost the sales numbers!
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Book Depository has it for $26 USD for the July 1 date. Got that preorder! I've never bought a new release from them, but a short delay won't kill me.

Thanks for the heads up, I’ll preorder from there too!
