2020 MALAZAN RE-READ: BLOOD AND BONE

Book description for Blood and Bone:

Quote

In the western sky the bright emerald banner of the Visitor descends like a portent of annihilation. On the continent of Jacuruku, the Thaumaturgs have mounted yet another expedition to tame the neighboring wild jungle. Yet this is no normal wilderness. It is called Himatan, and it is said to be half of the spirit realm and half of the earth. And it is said to be ruled by a powerful entity whom some name the Queen of Witches, and some a goddess: the ancient Ardata.

Saeng grew up knowing only the rule of the magus Thaumaturgs―but it was the voices out of that land's forgotten past that she listened to. And when her rulers mount an invasion of the neighboring jungle, those voices send her and her brother on a desperate mission.

To the south, the desert tribes are united by the arrival of a foreign warleader, a veteran commander in battered ashen mail whom his men call the Grey Ghost. This warleader takes the tribes on a raid like none other, deep into the heart of Thaumaturg lands. Meanwhile word comes to K'azz, and mercenary company the Crimson Guard, of a contract in Jacuruku. And their employer...none other than Ardata herself.

January 1st 2020 we began the re-read of the main series of the Malazan books. The plan being to read one book a month. We've now added additional Erikson and Esslemont publications to the schedule, to be read roughly according to the publication order.

February 1st we begin the re-read of Blood and Bone, the 5th book in the Novels of the Malazan Empire series.

There will be spoilers for all published books. So beware. Spoiler blocks are not mandatory but if people want to use boxes for the latest Kharkanas books or the Path to Ascendance books for example, I'd personally appreciate it.

Are you ready? What do you remember about Blood and Bone?

I remember being impressed by the story of the Jungles of Jacuruku. The way Esslemont describes the horror and splendor of that green inferno was gripping. I also remember enjoying seeing Kallor is action - He's a bad guy but I can't help rooting for him.

I remember being less impressed with the parallel story of the weird Evil Denul empire going on some military campaign that went nowhere. It felt like a waste of the readers time.

I like that the epigraph to each chapter relates to Jacuruku, whether customs or rumors or whatever. I have a bad habit of mostly skimming / skipping Erikson’s, but find myself interested in these. Fun to see Prince Jatal referencing these books too.

Side note - I’ve never seen the word atavistic used so much as it is here.

Starting this tomorrow, and I'm not sure that I read it the first time. So could be lots of questions from me.

So having read the first chapter I think I may have read this before, too many vague remembrances.

Nice to see Kallor back.

No clue whats in the middle of the Dolmens. Is it everybook we find a way to cram in some Malazan marines? Have we had one without them yet?

The Avowed clearly are the successors to the T'lan Imass. Given Shimmer couldn't sense when K'azz and the other one did in the ice field I wonder if she has retained more humanity and therefore is less pussiant in this respect. Certainly in governor mode she leant in mode than it would suggest the other guard do.

Saen(sp?) Has some strong Mary Sue vibes coming off her.

Onto chapter 2!

Finished Chapter 2 and warming up nicely.

Osserc continues to be a bit of a douche.

Saeng continues to be a bit meh.

Don't believe its a part of crippled God in the Dolmens. No clue as to what it is yet.

The Osserc bits are really quite annoying. Uo to chapter 6 now. Enjoying the flow but not much is making me want to ask questions yet or go wow.

Some of the tropeyness of this is really irritating me as I go through. E.g. Murk meets big warrior woman and instant sex and generally the reaction to the tribe. Feeling the male gaze a bit too much.

Himitan and the general mystery keep the interest going but it does feel a bit schlocky at times.

Again why at the end of chapter nine is the description of spite centred around her breasts and hair?

I don't see why Rutgana tells Skinner about K'azz before getting whupped. Its a bit evil villain reveal my plan before you die. I get people are stupid but still...

Either I've levelled up as a reader or this book is a lot more tropy than the others. Over two thirds through now.

As a Latin American who's spent his entire life in tropical countries, I must say Blood and Bone is my personal favourite in the entire series, and I even like to call it "Malazan goes Tropical".

Finally a fantasy book that delves into the mysteries of an Amazon-like rainforest.

Finished. I think a tad disappointed in those books. And while the setting was good and I think CAM'S craft improved it just didn't work for me. Quite a lot of it felt hollow...

I think the end state was disappointing and didn't do too much new for me outside the setting itself. No new novel takes.

Onto Assail... only 3 days behind schedule.
