I'm happy to work with them to modernize everything. It will be a lot of work, but none of it is impossible.

It's not a "work with them" situation. It would need to be a "take complete ownership of the entire website" situation.

Last i knew, we had some money stashed for this sort of thing - do we need to engage a professional?
I'm happy to do whatever but lack the tech knowledge to actually know what to do, or how to do it, or whose brains to eat to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge.

Ooof, 1k annually for a new version of an IPB even if there is no migration and we just convince everyone to move there.

Is there free hosted Message Board software out there to utilize like back in the day with Proboards and such, or is to all paid these days? Looks like free Proboards is still a thing...

That might be the best option. Abandon this one, and make a post with the link shifting everyone willing to the new one, same admins or new ones could be there, no?

Is there a reason we need the paid type?

I admit to knowing nothing much about it....but I was an Admin back in the day at a Tori Amos Proboards site, and it worked well for our purposes....

I have no expertise in how to host, yet I am happy to contribute financially to this collective moving to modern software. Let's say $350 a year.

If the path forward can be plotted, I can supply some of the money/fuel required to travel through it.

Most other forum platforms (or more modern Invision software) do have ways to migrate all the existing forum data/user accounts to them.

I completely lack any and all technical knowhow for this stuff but would be quite happy to put some $$$ toward it. Not a lot mind you, but since I also pay for Netflix that monthly amount seems reasonable.
I used to throw some money a couple of times a year back in the day via the Paypal donate link on the front page. Nowadays I don't even know if it works and last time I asked Silencer about it (years ago admittedly) he said the finances weren't a burden.
I should probably raise the subject again with him.

Ditto.

i think the issue is the time & responsibility requirement not funding, though.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I'm reasonably certain we have a reserve of money more than adequate to do whatever, I just dont know what whatever amounts to, but am willing to do it, give or take some of the bloodier/more invasive/illegal in six or more jurisdictions/llama-centric options.

I think part of the current issue stems from a single (or two) people running the entire website. It would be better to have a larger group (4-5) to ensure continuity of support if 1-2 burn out on it.
