This is an absolutely bonkers article to read: https://www.vice.com...angering-locals

A young couple in Quebec sold everything and tried to move to the most remote community that they could with zero preparation or skills needed to survive. Luckily, they were discovered and sent back south as soon as possible.

Wow. Potentially bringing disease to a self-governing First Nations community of 250 people. 'Old Crow has asked people not to come there in order to limit the potential for bringing COVID-19 with them. The Yukon government, meanwhile, had just declared a state of emergency, and requires any visitors to the territory to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival. The couple had apparently not done so.

[...] "They thought they could come to Old Crow and find a job and find a place to live" [...] "When you stepped off the plane, you stepped into Vuntut Gwitchin territory. You are now on our land[. ...] We control the housing."'

Positive Corona news in Denmark. The rate of new cases is flattening slowly and the prime minister believes we could start slowly opening the country back up as early as mid April.

We'll see. Sounds too good to be true.

I'm already wondering what we'll be doing at the library. Larger gatherings will likely still be banned. We could just keep most of the library closed off but permit the reservation, check-out and check-in of the books.

Then there's the question of handling the books. I guess we'll need gloves for everyone.

Here's hoping that accurate. It's great to see China begin to open up slowly too. The more countries that can recover from this in as short a time as possible with a nicely flattened curve, the better.

I just hope it's not going rear up again for opening up early.

That's a valid fear, but my hope is that the powers that be in China are not stupid enough to do it if they aren't ready. Their numbers are dwindling for infections (I think only like 30 today?) and about 4 deaths.

My worry is that China, having been caught out trying to cover up will be desperate to bring good news and saying "hey Wuhan is out of lockdown" is excellent news but I can't help but be suspicious of their government...

New normal: read news item about famous person dying, normally may not give it further attention, now check to see if the cause was coronavirus.

If china isnt lying through their teeth about their numbers Ill be shocked. Just impossible to understand how after having cases in beijing etc that it didnt spread more.

In regards to some of the above, I would say Trump being in charge now has a signfiicant increase in the number of deaths the USA will experience. Similairly the fact thar South Africa is now led by Ramaphosa and not Zuma is huge. The difference that means cant be measured but it will be light and day. Id like to say hopefully this will mean people will think twice about who they elect to be their president but I doubt it.

Better to negotiate with publishers for an increase in digital licences.

The actor who played Union Bob on 'Mozart in the Jungle' and a leading role in Desperately Seeking Susan (among many other film, tv, and stage credits---Succession, Billions, You, Crocodile Dundee) died from coronavirus complications:

"I always appreciated Mark's clear perception of complex situations," Damon wrote of Blum, a former SAG-AFTRA board member. "He always spoke the truth and did a great service in informing members of our community about the ins and outs of the union whenever he had the opportunity."

Fans of Blum's echoed her sentiment. Actor Zach Braff said he "could not have been a kinder human being" and praised his "wonderful" acting.

Actor and former New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon called his performances "unfailingly deep, subtle, hilarious and moving in equal measure."'

Do I misunderstand how factories work? You can’t just switch from making cars or vacuum cleaners to making ventilators?

I'm not an engineer but I'd assume that heavily depends upon what kind of part of a machine you're making or assembling. Assembly lines can be highly specialized and the function of the factory worker very specific.

There's surely more to building a ventilation machine than just inserting code into a 3D printer and screwing stuff together. The individual components are probably also usually made all across the globe.

Depending on the size of the plant you could have giant machines that cost $XXX,XXX to even a few million that are very specialized as doing one thing over and over again and can't exactly be re tooled. having previously worked for an automotive part manufacturer you wouldnt believe the variety and country of origin of all of these component manufacturers as well as material processing vendors. All of this just to create automotive parts, let alone a full car.

Purhase orders would sometime specify price per quantity in terms of 6 or more significant digits because of the quantities involved. Large scale manufacturing doesn't just turn on a dime.

'A high-ranking federal official in late February warned that the United States needed to plan for not having enough personal protective equipment for medical workers as they began to battle the novel coronavirus, according to internal emails obtained by Kaiser Health News.

The messages provide a sharp contrast to President Donald Trump's statements at the time that the threat the coronavirus posed to the American public remained "very low." In fact, concerns were already mounting, the emails show, that medical workers and first responders would not have enough masks, gloves, face shields and other supplies, known as PPE, to protect themselves against infection when treating COVID-19 patients.

The emails, part of a lengthy chain titled "Red Dawn Breaking Bad," includes senior officials across the Department of Veterans Affairs, the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as outside academics and some state health officials'

While I'm aware that it's really nowhere near as bad as Italy, Spain, Iran, China or even the US, the death toll in Denmark has now gone above 100. It's just a few every day, but it adds up.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Ours is escalating at the predicted rate.

One thing to read it, another to see them slowly taking up beds and spilling out of the original designated containment zones.

I'm off until Saturday now but the landscape will have changed again dramatically by then.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.
