I see a massive resurgence in a week or two after "super Saturday" (fuck our government and the media)

And yeah, second wave, it ain't here yet anywhere, it's coming though.

Hopefully the nightingale remains empty, but it's there if needed and that will shut all the wanker up who are complaining about it being built

My Mom just told me that she has heard it mentioned a couple times this past couple days, that in states where the hospitals are being overcrowded, people that come in with covid that are over 72 are being sent home to die.

Is this true? She said she heard it on cnn.

This is what happened in Italy when they were peaking. The doctors in the ICU had to make judgement calls to allow older people to die, while they used ventilators on younger people who had more life left ahead of them.

They can't do anything else. If the hospital is full, and the ventilators all in use...they physically cannot help them survive. So they had to make choices.

This is why flattening the curve was/is SO imperative and why the USA has failed its citizens to badly by trying to will the virus away politically and open the economy back up...they have basically doomed a shittonne of people to death because of overwhelmed hospitals.

I keep seeing new videos of "Karens" and "Florida Man" raging about wearing a mask. Just watched one of a guy with a "Running the World Since 1776" t-shirt and sunglasses on backwards in that douchey, l'm cool guy, this is how I do it when I'm out of the sun way. I think we could have a separate thread devoted to these kinds of videos, there are multiple every day now. Don't these people have no shame that someone is recording them and their public display of anger temper tantrums will posted online? They are endlessly amusing and entertaining though.

We were ready for that. An icu consultant I work with was expecting to have to make these calls once we were at capacity - possibly removing older people if say, a road accident came in with a young patient that needed ventilating.

We got to the point where our ICU was full, and we had theatres all set up for overspill - but it didnt come, fortunately. Patients got transported out to other hospitals, and many died, freeing up bed spaces.

That point of being overwhelmed at the start was the worst bit I think - it must be awful where it has become a reality.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

'the man, named as Ted Todd Insurance employee Daniel Maples, wearing a red "Running the world since 1776" T-shirt and screaming after a woman asked him to put a face mask on. He can be heard yelling "I feel threatened!" and "Back the fuck up and put your fucking phone down!"

[...] Maples' company later released a statement saying: "The behavior in the video is in direct conflict with our company values and their employment has been terminated. Threatening behavior and intimidation go against our core mission to be trusted advisors in our community."'

Another insurance industry person (coincidence?...).

I don't know why all these Karens and Kevins think that this kind of behaviour isn't going to affect their livelihood, it almost always does. They seem almost gleeful to have it filmed...and then get pissy when they lose their jobs because their company doesn't want the bad press of being associated with them.

(Isnt this generalising name shaming really unfair to all the Karens who are actually not like that? I dont know, I just dont like the way its suddenly ok to call out a whole generation of people with the same name just because a few turned out to be assholes. You know, it just reminds me of the way the older gen talk about 'blacks' or 'the gays' like they're all the same person. I thought we were over that shit, not just carrying it on with new labels)

If someone acts like an asshole, just call them assholes.

As a counterpoint, a Karen is a very specific type of person - and you don't have to be named Karen to be one. So it's hardly a generalisation. Although it is unfortunate that some very nice people whose names actually are Karen (I know one, she's mortified) are getting caught in the crossfire.

The term originates in the black community, where there historically have been, sometimes deadly, consequences for calling a particular kind of asshole an asshole.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Just like Boomer....the people getting called this stuff are getting upset not because they hate the term boomer or the name Karen...it’s that they know it’s meant to put them in their place for having a big mouth or displaying their idiocy.

And that’s why it’s okay to use. Because they don’t get to be protected from having a big mouth or displaying ignorance.

I mean hell, Boomer is literally their generation...it’s just been mildly weaponized against them...and they don’t like that. And I find that hilarious.

'Doctors may be missing signs of serious and potentially fatal brain disorders triggered by coronavirus, as they emerge in mildly affected or recovering patients, scientists have warned.

Neurologists are on Wednesday publishing details of more than 40 UK Covid-19 patients whose complications ranged from brain inflammation and delirium to nerve damage and stroke. In some cases, the neurological problem was the patient’s first and main symptom.

The cases, published in the journal Brain, revealed a rise in a life-threatening condition called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (Adem), as the first wave of infections swept through Britain. At UCL’s Institute of Neurology, Adem cases rose from one a month before the pandemic to two or three per week in April and May. One woman, who was 59, died of the complication.

A dozen patients had inflammation of the central nervous system, 10 had brain disease with delirium or psychosis, eight had strokes and a further eight had peripheral nerve problems, mostly diagnosed as Guillain-Barré syndrome, an immune reaction that attacks the nerves and causes paralysis. It is fatal in 5% of cases.

[...] “We’re seeing things in the way Covid-19 affects the brain that we haven’t seen before with other viruses”'

Uptick in attacks on Asian Americans being reported. Could it be tied to Trump leaning back in to and doubling down on calling Covid-19 the "Chinese Flu" and "Kung-Flu"? Hmmmm *RubsChin* let me take some time and think on it for a moment. I'll have to give that one more thought in order to form an opinion.

I don't think racist people need Trump's inspiration to do racist things.

I think you'd be surprised how people change when they see someone in a position of authority doing racist this they know is wrong, but want to do anyway. While they were still racist, they weren't as open about it and weren't willing to do it in public around people they didn't know.

The tech CEO shouted 'Trump's gonna fuck you up'.

'ABC News finds 54 cases invoking "Trump" in connection with violence, threats, alleged assaults.

[...] in at least 12 cases perpetrators hailed Trump in the midst or immediate aftermath of physically assaulting innocent victims. In another 18 cases, perpetrators cheered or defended Trump while taunting or threatening others. And in another 10 cases, Trump and his rhetoric were cited in court to explain a defendant's violent or threatening behavior.'

https://abcnews.go.c...ory?id=58912889

To get back on topic---same goes for anti-maskers. Multiple examples of them citing Trump.

Would some of them have done it anyway? Sure.

But what are the odds that Trump isn't significantly contributing to these behaviors? Extremely small.

'there is a clear correlation between Trump campaign events and incidents of prejudiced violence. [...] The data analysis discussed above has centered on correlations; they are suggestive of a link between Trump and racist attitudes and behavior, but do not actually demonstrate that one leads to the other. However, there is also causal evidence to point to. In experiments, being exposed to Trump's rhetoric actually increases expressions of prejudice.'

https://www.brooking...o-the-data-say/

Granted, a cursory search didn't turn up a study of the correlation between Trump's tweets and violence against Asian-AMericans this year. But here's one from 2018: 'Do Trump Tweets Spur Hate Crimes?

Study makes strong case that president's Twitter activity encourages anti-Muslim crimes'
