Likewise the trade basically allowed me to move in the second cruiser, without which I would probably have played for time (play tech, research Grav drive, build additional carrier + fighters, move all those in). That might still have been the safer play, but...

Depends. From your chat with Twelve, I gather you're not going to diplo MR. As such, I think your plan is to take A/F next turn, then Diplo that system, and research twice if I can stall research until then.

For me, this will only work if I lose against Blend and Warfare is played before Diplo, or if I win and Leadership is played before Diplo.

If I win against Blend and I can play Tech before Diplo I have a shot at the 8 production VP, though.
