This thread is about a film project six years ago. I think it is safe to say that it is now either dead or stuck in limbo, like the other movie/TV project "Dark" that Erikson was also involved in years ago,

Yes, my friends that read MBotF came to me at D&D the other day and said "Wow man, they're making a Chain of Dogs movie!" and I simply replied "You poor deluded fools. The authorities at the Malazan Forum have declared this to be a non-event and therefore unworthy of contemplation." Then I asked, "So where did you hear that?" hoping for a scoop. Alas, I cannot report any good news, but it does seem that folly travels slowly into these parts, for once.
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

Chain of dogs... Its such a powerful story, the way to covey some of the emotion is with great music.

I was thinking something along the lines of the LotR's music. It will bring a tear to your eye without even watching the film.

Plus i can see Geoffrey Rush as Dukier. He has that feeling of knowledge like he's seen it all before. Kinda like Dukier?

Duiker was described as having dark skin. I see Duiker a lot like Eli from "The Book of Eli". My vote is for Denzel Washington.

I always wanted to direct my favourite books into films, or have a big part in them, off camera wise, maybe an extra :shocking:
Robert Jordans Wheel of time books to film and Malazan Books oh yes! If i could i would put everysingle line from the book into the film. No matter the cost. No matter the time.
The full story matters.

Hmm…thinking of this and whilst I'd just love to see a visualisation of this its just occurred to me that MbotD is perfect background material for a Live Role Play system!

Interesting human races and political systems – check!

Several non-human races – check!

Magic with a sensible theory and limit behind it – check!

Magical transportation (warren travel) – check!

Natural friction between races, countries and political systems – check!

…sounds a lot like most good LRP systems I know.

World Of Warcraft? xD

WoW is for people who don't want to go out of the room! So, no...I wanna field FULL of Malaz citizens...enemies, battles, intrigue and underhand politics!

Hmmm...back on the film concept (MBoTD, not just CoD)....how about "un-random" conjecture for casting?

I’ll be controversial here and say:

it is truely too bad that this wont be happening. as in another thread i posted i think the best medium to tell this grand gutwrenching storey would be in the setting of a yearly tv series one hour epidsodes, done by a company such as hbo, so that battle gore, nudity and the dark adult themes would not have to be censored. there are a few examples of good tv series that have been done that explore adult themes and concepts, such as rome, oz, deadwood, sons of anarchy, sopranos and to a lesser extent, true blood, the tudors, battle star galaticA.

Well, A Game of Thrones was greenlighted, so if that's successful, who knows, just maybe...

Danny Trejo as Coltaine
He doesn't say much in anything but still somehow manages to have an intimidating presence
besides, he totally rocked it in Machete

To be honest, I don't think any movie would do justice to the cinematics that go on inside my head whenever I read it. I frequently take the time to visualize everything I read in the book. Try this out the next time you're bored: pick any major place, character, event, object etc. and try to imagine in great detail what it/they look like, sounds like, feels like, moves like. I've wasted many an hour thinking about the sound of Gothos' voice, the look of Kalam's knives and Apt's face, the lighting at Vathar crossing, what the explosion of Coltaine's road looks like in bullet-time, and more. So much fun.

To the naysayers:
Yes, the project looks to be dead as there has been no movement on it in a VERY long time, but at one point someone did option the rights to make a film based on the Chain of Dogs but it did not work out. The rights probably expired a long time ago too. This is what happens when they try to convert books into films. Foe ex, if you follow the timeline of the HBO Game of Thrones series through GRRM's blog, about two years ago HBO optioned the rights. Then they hired someone to work on the script, once the script was turned in , they decided it was satisfactory and greenlit a Pilot. Then they had to hire a director and cast it, and all of this has to go well. Then once the Pilot was turned in they finally greenlit it to series, but with changes. In fact there were several casting changes and the Pilot has been re-shot. Also, the expiration of rights to published works led to the travesty of "Queen of the Damned." The studio had to get both that and Vampire Lestat into production by a certain date or they would lose the rights to both books. That's why the studio tried to combine them then the whole project was rushed. Furthermore, Anne Rice actually sold the rights to Interview three times before the film got made.
Is this the story of Johnny Rotten?

I'd like to see it made a movie & all, I mean 90% of movies made anymore are pure crap, remakes of remakes etc. I just don't think anyone could do the Chain Of Dogs the way I see it in my head.

I doubt there will ever be a malazan movie or tv series.

Unless...

Are any of you guys the sultan of Brunei (I'm looking at you Abyss)? If so, mind forking out $200 or so mil for the budget?

One way to make the realisation of such a task could be by using the net.

There are the exemple of the Star Wars fan movies that we can find in yourube. Most are ... mmmm .... let say interresting (willing to be Politically correct here); but some fews show it is possible to produce neat work with small possibility.

I do not believe the normal distribution channels will accept MBoF, and even it would be a saga similar to StarWars in size, so would take the same amount of time to make it (20 years .....).

But is it really the need to use movies, anime could do it, may reduce the cost, may also increase the possibility to distribute it.

There are ways to film that look good despite being cheap..I'm not really up on the specifics or anything, but for all the potential "OMG" setpieces and action, Malazan still boils down to a story about people, free will vs fate and the domino effect of the choices we make.

People always try and get too showy with their special effects these days. Jaws is still the best example of how hiding the most fantastic elements most of the time makes them seem cooler, whereas something like Eragon continually undermines itself by flaunting its suspect special effects.
