It's... dissapeared off the map, pretty much. Haven't heard of any progress at all.

Well, lets hope that Raimi's 'Wizard's First Rule' adaption opens the door - if that does well, I'd much rather see the Malazan world than the Wheel of Time (and don't get me wrong, I'm a great fan of WOT). But just in terms of scenery, battles, and sheer kickassness, TMBoF trumps anything out there at the moment. (Okay, haven't read GRRM's epic yet). So, lets hope WFR does well, then bring on the Bridgeburners!

I think that this series could be pulled off better if it was made into an HBO series like Martin's books are.

Martin is getting an HBO series? I didn't know that.

Yes he is. I think Martin is actually more suited for screen adaptation than SE is.

Blech....I can't root for Terry.....I just can't do it.

GRRM and HBO are working together...but it's by no means a done deal.

GotM would be the only book they could even TRY to make a singular movie about....and it would still be almost impossible.

Yeah Erikson doens't seem like it would be easy at all to adapt itno screenplay without changing a lot. ASoIaF on the other seem almost as if they were meant to be. (Didn't he spend like ten years doing screenplays for TV anyway? Or something like that at least.) I'm sure that it would do better with ratings as it is easier to understand (and I think more people know about him) but still I'm not sure if HBO would make enough money with this. I have doubts it will happen. Though I hope it does, GRRM has been very exciting (although a little depressing I must say)

Just joined the forum, and didn't bother to read all the cazillion pages of the thread, so sorry if I'm reapeating something already discussed here.

First of all, of course I'd love to see anything Malazan hit the big screen. Problem with that is it'd mots likely fall flat on it's arse. If made in to a movie it'd have some major expectations and loads of literary nuances that would be difficult if nearly impossible to translate to the screen. On the other hand they said Watchmen couldn't be made into a movie and I kinda agreed, but Zach Snyder actually pulled it off pretty well. It could work if given a good director and a huge budget.

TV-series could be a better choice since I recall reading somewhere that Steven Erikson actually started writing Malazan stuff as TV-scripts, which were ultimately rejected by studios because they would have cost too much. Therein lies the problem of a TV-series: money. Unless it would be made into the most expensive series in the history of mankind, it would suck big time. Do it like they did Rome or don't do it at all, that's my opinion. Don't do it like they did with Wizards First Rule and ended up with a pile of s**t that is the Legend of the Seeker.
No, my username has nothing to do with a certain wickan warlock. The damned biach stole my username as far as I know.

That implies that the series wouldn't have been terrible even if they made it exactly the same as the books...;)

I still vote for a MMORPG. That seems the best way to feed my obsession. TV and movies seem an unrealistic expectation. While visually they would be best they would have to strip them down or make the into a running soap opera 25 year style event. Couldn't happen. And while animation COULD work... I dont think pixar or dreamworks do these types. And if it isn't them I would expect major dissapointments.

A MMOG (online game) would be better suited. The magic system alone would be nice versus alchemy/explose. Might vs Magic. Different races as well. SE's world is good enough for the game world.

I think some of the stories would be a good stand alone movie.

You could probably only do stories from the books that introduce story arcs ie 1, 2 and 5 and just maybe 3. Everything else would require too much knowledge of the characters and what has already happened, which would have to be explained somewhere. Way too much of an info dump.

I keep trying to design a MBotF card game, but there's just way too many characters to include all the ones I think should be in it.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I doubt it because theres to many characters and things and they wouldnt be able to fit it all in a movie

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

I seriously hope they don't make a movie about any of Eriksons books per se, since they'd have to cut out so much content. The LotR movies ended up cutting/changing a lot of things and Tolkiens books (~1.5k pages total in the 3 books that I own) are a lot shorter than Eriksons.

An animated series like The Clone Wars on the other hand might work. Fitting one book into one season shouldn't be too much of an effort, although not into seasons as short as those of Rome. Fantasy & SciFi also fit into animation so much better, since it doesn't really cost that much extra there to show all the special effects and fictional background scenery, as everything needs to be drawn (or computer generated) anyway.

Of course, for any production to actually work, they'd need to get SE in the crew to resolve any conflicts about how this and that should look, since he's the only one with a real idea of what everything really should look like and SE's writing style isn't one to describe every character down to the smallest detail.
'Don't even try', she snarled at him, and then stalked into the tavern.
Gruntle stared after her, 'What did she mean? Try what?'
'Getting under her skirt,' said Quell.
'But she doesn't wear -'
'That's not the point,' the wizard cut in. 'You're thinking like a man. That's your mistake. It's all our mistake, in fact. It's why we're stading out here, three men, no women. If we'd gone and said, why Precious, we wouldn't even think of it, you know what she'd say then? "What's wrong with me? Am I too ugly or something?" and we'd be in trouble all over again!'
