I like Abeleyn's idea of Karl Urban as Coltaine. He played a serious character in The Chronicles of Riddick and it suited him. I dont see a problem with him being a bit young though, if necessary im sure he can always be made to look older

Another thought on Coltaine, why not Karl Urban? I think he'd be a good choice (after seeing The Chronicles of Riddick and LotR), even though he may be a bit young...

From way back on page one:-

LOL @"the mod-man" - ano's new name Posted Image.

@Oponn - that picture is funniest thing I saw in a while even on this utterly naff graphics card of my auntie's.

And ooooo on TOPIC!!!

I missed this argument dammit Posted Image.

Why you starting on DG's chain of Dogs? Is it cos of the recent resurgence in mass epic films such as LotR, Troy, Alexander. Surely it would be beeter for the movie goers to start with GotM as the story is more manageable and easier to get into than landing the viewer smack in the middle of a crazy new world. Plus it sets the scene for the rest of the series.

But hey what do i know I'm a 23 year old dancer Posted Image.

Eric Bana could be someone... I did like him, but I agree. He seems too... i dunno, nice, to be playing someone who is basically a big hard cold blooded ruthless commander. Laurence Fishbourne could. Is Coltaine coloured?
I wanna be in it as well!

The biggest problem with this is the fact that normally any author has to sign away rights to use the world in which any film is based and then have to seek the new owners permission to write any other stories based in that world. Its a fairly standard clause in any movie contract and the only exception that I know of is JK Rowling who got round that by having so much power behind the worldwide success of Harry Potter, authors such as SE I fear wouldn't have that sort of clout.

If it were to happen what are the odds of a number of us forum members getting taken on as extra's etc for knowing the world and what we could or couldn't do. lol

Well this is very encouraging....and perhaps I'm unduly cynical. I'm just being an SE fan and demanding the best to do him justice....and doing it rabidly Posted Image!

I don't doubt SE's literary or visual art abilities. I was simply responding to Cyandor's remark: "Thirldy A good author is that: a good author. But when it comes to exciting and good visual presentation he may not know best." My point wasn't that SE should or shouldn't be the artist, but that he should be "in on it" (as I actually said). We love and respect what he wrote. Wouldn't it be taking something away from him to NOT give his views preeminence in the visual translation of his writing?

What you say you're doing is a dream come true Patch. Along that line you have not only my support but my respect Posted Image. People just don't want to be disappointed, hence the cynicism (as I'm sure you can appreciate). Posted Image

Ok, there is an easy way to settle this.

Patch can either get SE to contact me or one of the other Admins or even get him to visit the site and give us an update.

I could always contact him myself but I prefer not to annoy him. Patch shouldn't have that problem as they are friends.

Until then lets give Patch the benefit of the doubt.

I think Duiker's resurrection should be the last scene of the film, as although the events are dark it gives us hope that as the historian survives that at least the tale will endure.

My main hope for the story is that the image of the crows in the finale coming to take Coltaine's soul is left in as it's a too powerful image to ignore.

In regards to the whole Big actor role, I do believe the main concern isn't who should play but who can we afford? Val Kilmer hasn't seen as many movies recently to my knowledge, though he seems to have an important role in Alexander coming out. Val Kilmer's contract fees would probably end up being more than the movie budget, unless he decides to settle into more indepedent movies like Bill Murray. Besides I'd also like to see a more non-hollywood actors, more canadians for one (maybe Christopher Plummer could play Duiker... only a thought) as well as some aussies.
My 2 cents.

In fact, it's downright grim. Rows of crosses, stretching into the distance?

No crosses, actually - they were nailed to the trees.

Chain of Dogs is certainly a great place to start with movie versions of the Malazan books, and it would make a great film, if a bit bleak. And it'll be interesting to see how the other storylines not being shown are used where they cross - if Mappo's final scene is included, for example, or if we see the parts about Duiker trying to help Heboric.
Of course, if it is successful you'll have to make 'Raraku', if only to placate us MBotF fans.
