Doesn't work for me. I've read them once and I'm rereading them now and I seem to unconciously skip all the "useless philosophising", so you'll have to point out some...

Hey everyone, thougtht I would announce my return to the forums.

@Caladan Brood

Hey, I'm going to see Martin on the 25th Oct in Basingstoke, hopefully see you there.

On Topic: I haven't been waiting as long for the new book so I don't really care on the time to be honest. Martin is good but Erikson is better.

Actually, Erikson is good, but Martin is better. Not that it matters. R. Scott Bakker will surpass them both. I can't wait for a new generation of writers.

This kind of posting is kinda pointless. I mean, here we are, discussing for some 11 pages who and WHY is better, and you come posting one-centence-statement and for what? A flame-war? Abit late for that...

Yup. What's not fine is that you're talking about something but refuse to give examples of it :D

Well change it. We don't get snippy at people for individual posts on this forum. (well, with a few notable exceptions;))

I find several of your arguments amusing Roland.

You first claimed aSoIaF wasn't fantasy and then you critizised him for using one of the advantages fantasy writers have, namely freedom to use their imagination to make societies, cultures and worlds that are different from ours:

Quote

1) It's not realistic for a society, which has existed for hundreds and even thousands of years (if I'm not wrong), even if it is still on medieval level of technology, to be the same as the real medieval one. They had far more time to evolve in the psychological/phylosophical/emotional departments and this should show.

Just like the indians in America developed in several thousands of years while being isolated from the rest of the world? If Martin creates a world where development doesn't go much further than the medieval ages of our world, it is fully within his right as a fantasy writer. Not a valid point of criticism IMO.

The debate about the delay of AFFC is similarly absurd IMO. You say that he will lose popularity and fans when he delays it. Fine. That is his risk to take as a writer. IMO he risks more (atleast long term) if he publishes work he (or his fans) isn't satisfied with. The time between the books might seem like a big deal now, but in 20-30 years, who will care? Then only the quality will count.

Regardless of that, this isn't the speed GRRM usually writes in anyway, so your estimate of the release of the last book (2025 was it?) is not valid. The other 3 books were published with 2 years between them:
- aGoT (1996)
- aCoK (1998)
- aSoS (2000)

I find aSoIaF to be a breath of fresh air to the genre. I am tired of the standard fantasy setting you seem to miss in GRRM's books. His books are also refreshingly unpredictable, atleast compared to other fantasy books.

BTW, I also like SE a lot :D

Edited for spelling

@ Roland

I had 30 seconds to write a post concerning three things and I'm not a particularly fast typer. Isn't the point of a forum to express opinions, and was I not expressing my opinion. So back off and don't try and dictate what I should and shouldn't post.

Danforth, I think he was referring to Izz, who posted immediately after yours, not to you, though I agree with the general sentiment of what you're saying - forums are about expressing opinions.

Yup, 'f corz I was talking to Izz. I think there is a point in each conversation, after which it is ultimately stupid and flame-bringing to make statements like his without anything to back them up.
