Hey.
I badly need book recommendations. I have not been reading so much lately and have just started getting back into it. It just took me a month to finish oathbringer and Ars Arcanum.
I see mark Lawrence's grey sister is finally out so I think that will be next.
I am very out of the loop, any good debuts this year? New series from well known authors? New books from longstanding series.
I will try do some research on amazon later but I need a few books asap to keep me busy. I miss reading

Outside of that
Have you read David Gemmells Troy trilogy?
You haven't? You need to
You have? You need to read it again

There's the usual question of "what have you read?"
Off the top of my head, interesting recent-ish authors include "Traitor Son" (aka, "The Red Knight" by Miles Cameron; Sébastien De Castell's "Greatcoats"; Brian Staveley's "Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne"
On the sci-fi side... my recent favorite was Gavin Smith's "Veteran + War in Heaven" duology. Haven't read any of his other stuff yet, but those 2 were brilliant.

If you have not read Scott Hawkins' Library at Mount Char do so immediately.
Also anything at all by Max Gladstone.
Children of Time and Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky.
This year Sue Burke has released Semiosis which is really good.
Also definitely check out the various series by Jay Kristoff.

I will often walk by my shelf and see the TROY books and think "Is it time for a re-read?" Gods those are good books.

Not available from Amazon direct at all in dead tree.
And it's £10 for a second hand PB. I think I've enough on my TRP for now anyway. Must be at least 25/30 books in dead tree waiting for me and a ton on my Kobo as well

Robert Jackson Bennett's Divine Cities trilogy, N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth, and Ian Tregillis Alchemy Wars are all recent great reads that I recommend (as well as Greatcoats, Craft sequence, and Mount Char).

Read it ages ago. Liked it. Not sure if it needs a re-read just yet.

I still have the 5th book, fall of dragons to read? thanks I will put it on the list
I have no idea how anyone can recommend great coats. It caused me pain to read it.
Read unhewn throne, will need to reread it. I remember only the barest outline of what happened already
Will check out Gavin Smith thanks

Childre of Time and Guns may be worth a look. I never could get into his first series but I know many people enjoy his works and say he has been getting better with each book,
@Mark
Bakker is a firm favorite and his latest book was consumed long ago.

He most definitely has been improving with each book. And both of these are standalones so you won't get bogged down in a series.

Guns of the dawn is really solid musket-punk.

There are others. Gates of something" series.
Chris Evans' "Iron elves" trilo preceded this explosion (but wasn't very good".
His standalone "Of Bone and thunder" is really good though. It's like Vietnam but with dragons.

Just finished Ken Liu's DANDELION DYNASTY duo, and overall would recommend.
Also, if you missed Peter Clines’ PARADOX BOUND it’s a blast.
And i’ll echo the the upthread recos for LIBRARY AT MOUNT CHAR without hesitation.

Just finished book 1. I enjoyed it. However I cant say why. In fact I feel like I should not have. Was the story brilliant? The characters? The message? I don't think so. Instead its just such a simple read that flows maybe

It just works, and while perhaps none of the bits are intrinsically novel, the overall product is nicely different, and he absolutely nails making his characters both epic and human.

I have recently enjoyed KINGS OF THE WYLD by Nicholas Eames (fun fantasy romp with a music element)
...and SENLIN ASCENDS by Josiah Bancroft (quirky almost steampunk Alice in Wonderland)
I'm currently reading ICE's Deadhouse Landing (behind the times, I know)
...and Paternus by Dyrk Ashton. (cryptozoology urban fantasy god brawl)
I also really liked WHAT REMAINS OF HEROES by David Benem (dark, epic fantasy)
THE GREY BASTARDS by Jonathan French came out yesterday and it has some wicked hype. (toted as Mad Max wit orcs riding pigs)

I'm in the middle of Ilona Andrews first Kate Daniels book. I'm enjoying it immensely, to the point I think I might manage to devour it in one day, but the tropiness of the book does bore me a bit.
I am curious if any of you guys have read or have heard of any good urban/modern day fantasy out there that doesn't resort to the traditional formula of vampires, werewolves and elves.
Somebody who creates a familiar world but uses unique or at least new perspectives on mythological beings and magical structure?
It doesnt need to be as unorthodox as Peter Grant or the Laundry Books, just something that brings something new to the table
