This book was good. It definetly had some very tough parts to read that really made no sense to me. When I say tough I mean I just didn’t know WTF was happening. However the battle at the end was probably my favorite battle scene that Stephen has written so far. It was so easy to read and picture. Really intense and vivid.
This book had some seriously heart wrentching scenes (Hetan...oh poor Hetan). Some things that I thought would happen didn’t. Like I thought Rud Elalle would be the mortal sword but the way it worked out was better.
I found the most frustrating parts of this book were the Snake story arc and the 6 companions inside the Kalse rooted. I just didn’t understand what those stories had to do with anything. Until the end with Icarium. I didn’t guess it would be some multi personality deal.
I have a few questions tho...

1. Why was Veed killing the other guys in the dragon city?

2. What was Sulkit really? Drone, Matron or what?

3. Why is Toc the Younger listed as a Barghast in the character list in the beginning? Pretty sure he was Malazan.

4. What’s the deal with Olar Ethil and Toc. It seems she is forcing him to do stuff but I don’t understand how or why.

5. Is it clear on how Badelle has the powers to stop the Forkrul Assail? I didn’t understand that at all.

For the plot things (4&5), I'd suggest reading TCG and see if you still have those questions.

Veed is Icarium's last overseer. I guess it might have something to do with Icarium's issues with control/being controlled and how that manifests in the ghosts/personalities.
Sulkit is exactly what it seems to be, as far as I can tell, and that's a KCCM drone.
For the Dramatis Personae, Toc isn't in my DoD at all, in any group. Setoc is listed with the Barghast, is the closest thing I can think of.

Thanks Worry. I have TCG and I’m starting it very soon. That’s strange about Toc being on my list in the Barghast section. I have the MMP printed version tho so it might be a miss print

1. Because Icarium's mind had splintered into the different others but needed to be whole in order to operate Kalse Rooted/Uprooted. The different personality splinters needed to be reintegrated into the ghost of Icarium and Veed was the tool for that. Look at it like a metaphor.

2. All of that and nothing. Looks like the K'Chain had managed to programm nanobots to be able to repurpose certain breeds in case on an emergency. Kind of like the way a Matron can push out various breeds depending on her needs. So Sulkit starts out as a drone but becomes a Matron through the nanobots' reprogramming of her DNA because the keep is in need of a matron. There's probably magic envolved, but those are the simple terms the entire thing boils down to.

3. Are you sure it's Toc? Both my copies of DoD have Setoc listed with the Barghast and no Toc at all.

4 & 5: RAFO.
