I suspect that's exactly why she does it, especially writing in the mil SF field as she does.

Historically that was why CS Friedman started out writing sf as 'CS' before going with her actual name Celia much much later.



Also amusingly, there is at least one well known author writing urban fantasy under a female nom-de-plume because someone told him that would sell better.

Not the Andrewses.... they're honest about the Ilona thing being a pen name even tho it is silly given how honest about it they are about it. ...i'll try to remember/track down who it was.

The Winternight Trilogy (begins with The Bear and the Nightingale) is sort of historical fantasy based on Russian and Slavic folklore. The Warm Hands of Ghosts is set on the Western Front in France, is a bit of a darker historical fantasy which is more emotionally heavy, and I've just started her The Unicorn Hunters which is set in medieval Brittany and is mostly Celtic/Breton inspired folklore.

These are indeed lovely. My problem with Grim Oak is that their prices are TOO much for what they are offering. I realize they do smaller and more concerted runs (that's always how Shawn sells it) and that's why everything is more...but then do trade paperback Print on Demand versions that are much more reasonable or something. I want the art, but I cannot justify the price even in the before-Trump Economy...I would have bought half the library of stuff they've done if they had reasonably priced options.

i was all over the place on this... my love for Coldfire is strong and runs back decades and the opportunity to own a ltd ed version (that the author herself is very pleased with) hit me right between the wallet and the heart. I ended up buying the ltd ed w slipcase, not the insanely expensive hand bound version. I allow for the possibility i may only buy the first one, or the cheaper versions of 2 and 3. Will see what it looks like when i get it.

I recently listened to the first book and really liked it. It's a nice genre mashup of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. You should give it a shot.

The narrator, R.C. Bray, is excellent if you want to explore the audio route.

Well I've obtained the first one - Black Sun Rising - on Audible now. Just listening to a very quick story that came free with my subscription because they're usually fun, and then I think I'll move onto that one though I've got loads to listen to so maybe I'll have a quick browse of my library first.

If you get through the whole trilogy, there is a prequel about the world that it takes place on called NIGHTBORN: COLDFIRE RISING that is also great, but don't read it first as it spoils some stuff in the main trilogy.
