So once upon a time I lived in Oregon and grew up fishing on the Deschutes and Makenzie rivers. The entire state of Oregon makes for a spoiled trout fisherman. You can go to the smallest creek closest to you and find some good trout fishing. You also have access steelhead and salmon runs several times a year.

Well since I moved to the midwest I have not touched a fly rod or even fished with a spinner reel. Now I am feeling the call and starting to get back into the swing of things so I went through my fly gear. Well it turns out that my 2 piece rod that I was fine to lugg about oregon is from the 70s and is basically a walking stick. I had upgraded my reel to a Scientific Angler 6 weight before I moved so that isn't too bad. But as I am no longer a broke teenager I figured that I should get some matching rod and reels. Thus brings us to my current quandary.

I don't really want to drop a ton of cash on an outfit but would like to get a decent rod and reel that will last me for several years and that I could hopefully pass down to one of my kids.

I am looking at

or

https://www.amazon.c...93V8?th=1&psc=1

Now both of these have lifetime warrenties. So that isn't an issue. I am leaning toward the Echo because during the 2016 rod shoot out in the yellowstone angler it came in 13th.

Well that and Echo is a small company out of the Northwest. BUT I have a LL bean close to my house so if I broke my rod it wouldn't be a big deal to drive it up there and have them replace it.

Does anyone here fly fish and if so what are your thoughts.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

In case anyone care I ended up getting the Echo Base set. I am very excited. I thought that it would be better to support a company that is local to the waters that I grew up fishing. Rather then a big corporation. Very excited to take it out and get practicing again.

Also, I was pretty sure that Echo Base was on Hoth...Thus, I ask...can you also catch big snow monsters in caves with the set?

You put a small squirt of stink on the hook and the flys flock to the hooks. Then you have to use a blue light to bond them to the hooks and wallla.

No this is the entry model. For that I would need a stronger rod. Probably a 10 or 12 weight.

I was hoping someone like Slow Ben was a fisher. I have a good friend who fishes off boats, he doesn't fly fish. He truly is happiest on a boat and fishing gets him there on the boat.

Actually, if you find really good waders (chest high) I could use that at the company I work for. We've gone through some not great ones with plenty of patches and are getting tired of having to replace the crappy ones fast.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I hear that the best wadders are Simms. I already have 2 pairs of waders from when I lived in oregon. So I probably won't upgrade for at least a year. When I do it might be to a traveling pair of waders from LL bean as they also have a great warranty.

Here is a recent list from r/flyfishing.

1. Simms G3/G4 2. Orvis SonicSeam 3. Patagonia Rio Gallegos Boots - Simms, hands down.

The thing about LL bean is the lifetime satisfaction warranty which is crazy hard to beat. If Echo hadn't gotten such great reviews on their rods and come with a life time warranty I would have gone with a LL bean rod and reel.

A good pair of Wadders is going to cost anywhere from 250 to 400.

I do quite a bit of fishing, but never got into fly fishing.

Rod and reel for me.

Or just put out some catfish lures and drink a beer. Check the line in a couple hours, proceed to the next beer, etc., etc.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

I finally was able to get out on water and cast. I need a lot of practice. I was barely able to get about 30 feet off of the dock. I didn't catch anything but that was mainly due to having to stop fishing and help my son untangle his line..then respool his reel. Man the echo is a great rod to cast with. I will most likely be getting more of their rods. I went to the local orvis shop and they said that fly casting from the shore of Lake Michigan is really good, but you need at least and eight weight rod. As there is a good chance at catching trophy fish. I might get an 8 later on in the year after my casting gets better and I land a couple of smalls.
