What is an ascendant?

Checked through search and although there are a couple of ascendant threads, I didn't see one asking this question

So, what is an ascendant? how does it happen, what does it mean?

I think we see some who ascended after death, some who ascended after a narrow escape and others that we don't know (Did Rake ever ascend for instance or was he born that way)
Are ascendants immortal? I think there are forgotten ascendants mentioned in old decks, are they alive but inactive? dead? Is ascendancy the only way to immortality other than drugs? This seems unlikely, several species seem to live for hundreds of thousands of years at least, even the non ascendants

Are ascendants all mages? The Bridgeburners aren't, but the others? Does ascendancy give greater control over Warrens? What does it give? Icarium is not an ascendant as far as I know, but is pretty powerful, as were the Jaghut Tyrants

... this question has been discussed at great length in a number of different forums and threads here. Nothing concrete has been determined.

Have a blast reading the wild postulations on ascendants.

There is no concrete answer on how one becomes an ascendant. There are several paths to becoming an ascendant and countless characters have ascended through countless means. Becoming an ascendant doesn't mean you will live forever, you could live forever if no one manages to kill you. But you won't age, or die of natural causes. Someone can still kill you though.

You can't be an ascendant from birth, although there is no proof that its not possible. We just haven't seen such cases.

You don't have to be a mage to become an ascendant, but once you do ascend you gain acess to magic and what not. As is evident with Ganoes Paran (although there are those here who don't think he is one)

On the issue of the warren, I believe that only Gods have absolute control over a warren. Such as Shadowthrone. Then there are ascendants like Brood who have acess to warren's but don't control it absolutely. There is a neat discussion in the Bonehunters Forum on this topic. Feel free to wander there if you wish. Unless ofcourse it got deleted in the transfer:(

i dont thin shadowthrone had abslute control over meanas, after all its being contested by tiste edur and renegade t'lan imass. also i dont think gods have any more control over warrens than ascendants do, i mean, rake or icarium could probably kick shadowthrones ass

Rake is technically a God, he just hasn't formally accepted that title. But being a God/Ascendant once again has nothing to do with powerlevel. We've seen mortals who are capable of insane feats.

And when it says that their calim to Shadowrealm is being contested, meaning there are just others coming to lay claim to that releam. The Edur don't have acess to their own magic anymore. They relied on the Andii Wraiths for their magic.
