So I'm on my third re-read (re-listen this time I suppose) and I just noticed a line I never had before.

On the Crippled God's Island, after Iron Bars kills Rhulad, Withal says to him "They were broken blades, I think. Those black shards. From some kind of narrow-bladed, overlong knife. Two of them, black and brittle. Just pieces, really. I wonder where he collected them from?"

Referring to the black shards within the sword. Do we have any idea what those blades were? I'm normally pretty good at piecing this stuff together but I can't think of any answers.

ETA - My only real guess is that they were possibly the daggers that Scabandari used to stab Silchas Ruin in the back.

I believe the theory goes that the shards are the shattered blades Silchas Ruin used to kill the K'chain Che'Malle Matron, as mentioned in the prologue of Midnight Tides.

Huh... heard both theories, i thought they were the former... Scabby's dagger, not Silch's swords... tho the 'broken blades' wording could go either way... two blades, or two shards of the same blade.

I figured the use of the dagger as an instrument of betrayal that could immobilize a draconic ascendant made it more significant than two blades broken in combat.

Quothe the Silchas:

Quote

‘They were shattered,’ the Betrayer said. ‘Long ago. Fragments scattered across a battlefield. Why would anyone want them? Those broken shards can never be reunited. They are, each and every one, now folded in on themselves. So, I wonder, what did he do with them?

From MT, where Trull meets ghost Silchas, who is stomping around the former battlefield looking for his blades.

I always thought they were the enchanted blades Gothos used to shave his back.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.
