I'm not sure if I missed this when I was reading the book, or whether even this was mentioned at all, but what was the Imass' initial reason to undertake the ritual and become undead? Was this ever stated outright in the text? What I assumed was that the Imass became immortal in a way so as to continue their war against Jaghut indefinitely. Am I right in this?

The main benefit for the Imass undertaking the Ritual was that it allowed them to cross the massive ice barriers that the Jaghut had raised, which they obviously could not as regular mortals.

Being able to turn yourself to dust and reappear elsewhere at will also comes in pretty handy with combat.

Also useful for not starving to death when your enemy drops an ice age on you.
