I'm thinking of a very campy sci-fi flic that had aliens gather "heroes" from a whole bunch of planets to combat the evil planet-eaters. It had a space cowboy from Earth and a young protagonist who became the love interest of the endangered aliens' princess.

I think it was called " war of the stars" or smth.

Transformers: The Movie (1986)

Amazingly that movie did not make Leonard Nimoy swear off Transformers forever since he returned as Sentinel Prime in Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Also I just realized the subtle jab at Orson Welles in this movie. He voices Unicron, a planet sized Transformer who eats other planets. Let me repeat that, they cast Welles as someone who eats entire planets.
Man that's some huge shade. Kudos to the casting director.

That does NOT look like Unicron, though. He hada proper head with 4 spikes cming out of the helmet! The head actually survived the explosion, and it was an occasional plot device in the series later on (like that time Starscream's ghost showed up)

I know he doesn't when in humanoid form. In his planet form though it's roughly similar, but in the movie he has a ring and only two claws on the front when in planet form.

He doesn't eat Cybertron, but he does eat that other nameless planet at the beginning.
But considering the clues and the MSPaint nature of the situation I stand by my answer.
