The six screenwriters probably didn't help. And reports are that it's got the old-school damsel in distress type female lead which a week after WW (and considering Tom Cruise's recent record of having absolutely awesome women co-lead in his films) is a terrible look.
I really don't understand what Universal are doing here. A monster shared universe should be easy to do, as evidenced by the fact that urban fantasy writers and Alan Moore do it all the frigging time, often very well, but they've gone completely the wrong route with this one. They should be embracing the classic pulpy stylings of their original films, not this glossy high-production empty bullshit.
Because they are trying to replicate the DC and Marvel superheroverse, only with monsters.
I agree with you, it would be logical for them to embrace the pulpy origins, but no, they want Frankenstein to be Captain America with head stitches, the Wolfman to be Batman, and Dracula to be wholly forgotten after than last bad movie thing. They want some of that juicy AVENGERS money.
Also, they are idiots who think the audiences will go see any old crap.

Indeed!
Which was why the 90's Brendan Fraser MUMMY (the first one at the very least) was SO well received. They went ALL IN with the pulpy stylings.
The first two MUMMY movies are glorious fun, stupidly enjoyable even when they are being stupid, CGI Rock and all.
There was no third movie.
