I would add Dredd and The Mask to those that have been listed. Also, it's hard to say what #1 is for me, but I would definitely put Deadpool up there. It kicked the door in on conventional pg-13 comic book adaptions and gave that safe and unorginal thinking a big middle finger.

Feck! I forgot about DREDD. Goddamn I love that movie, I gotta modify my list now...

Dredd slides in at #2 for me. Cannot believe I forgot about that (maybe because I only read a few of the original comics).

I'm glad that I am not the only person on this forum who appreciates Sylvester Stallone's take on the Judge Dredd character.

So I'm going to be an awkward git and make two lists. One for all comic book movies and one for superhero movies including non-adaps because doing just superhero stories that are specifically adapted from comics seems to arbitrarily leave out loads of films. So:

All comics:

Oldboy
Kick-Ass
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds
A History of Violence
The Dark Knight

(Dredd and Akira narrowly missed out here)

Superheroes:

The Matrix (yes I'm counting it fuck off)
Kick-Ass
The Incredibles
The Dark Knight
X2

Didn't know until now that Oldboy was based on a comic book/manga.
I assume you are referring to the Korean movie and not Spike Lee's.

One weird movie. Too weird for my taste :-)

Heh.

My avatar's about due for a change-up, actually. Need to think up a suitable replacement for Nux though...

You can be a special snowflake, but the original post asks for just comic book movies.

See, now this is the kind of post I expected from Worry. (His page one post let me down in that regard.)
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Top 5, though not really in order:

Dredd (damn near flawless adaptation, right down to how Dredd himself sums up the entire film in two words at the end: "What happened here?" "Drug bust")

Blade (was tempted to put 2 as well as it's excellent, but ultimately Blade itself is an excellent film, despite the massive liberties taken with the original character [he's ENGLISH dammit, not American])

Batman (Burton's version, 1st one. Again, got some love for Returns for similar reasons as above - it's just marvellously OTT. A lot of people tend to forget that despite the work of Miller, at this point in time most people's image of Batman was still the Adam West fun version. Without Burton doing his thing? No gritty/serious comic book adaptations. Ever)

Guardians of the Galaxy (Quite simply, because it's fun)

Kick-Ass (because again, it's an excellent adaptation, it's fun, and most of the changes from the comics make sense)
meh. Link was dead :(

I should probably have specified Live Action comic book adaptations since adding in animations makes things a lot more complicated.

I still find my list chopping and changing, and I can't really pin down a comfortable top 5.

I think X-MEN 2 holds up really well, some great action, a story building off a a good intro movie, and hinting at a potentially brilliant story for the 3rd movie (sadly fucked up by the studio). While i enjoyed the rebooted ones, i don't think they work as well as X-2 overall.

I thoroughly enjoyed DEADPOOL for relentlessly poking fun at superhero movies, while being a pretty great one in it's own right.

For personal reasons, the first THOR movie remains one of my favourites, even though I know most others wouldn't agree.

I'd agree that DREDD is a great adaptation too.

While I rarely re-watch it, THE DARK KNIGHT is a great film, definitely elevated by Heath Ledger's great portrayal of THE JOKER. If it wasn't such a downer of an ending i would have watched it far more often.

I think Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the best of the Marvel ones though. While I really enjoyed Civil War something about feels a bit off, and i think it's mainly Tony Stark. Still a big fan of the first AVENGERS movies too, mainly for getting the Hulk so right.

Huge fan of both HELLBOY movies too, though the sequel is a step up. Some amazing visuals in both movies.

The real pity for me are the Zach Snyder ones, (both batman ones and WATCHMEN). He manages to produce some stunning looking works at times, but ultimately i find his films leave me cold. It's tantalising, in that they are so close to be great, but some part just falls flat. Man of Steel in particular, which is like 2 or 3 tonally different movies stuck together and so it lurches around from emotionally engaging set piece to sterile exposition. And that is Zach Snyder in a nutshell for me.

I'm not into superhero movies and have probably enver read a single comics but I really liked Kick-Ass, no other worthy comes to my mind. Still haven't seen Kick-Ass 2 though, is it any good?
