It does sound like it is him doesn't it? It's the first thing that came in mind when I read it

Yeah, that threw me for a loop too. Seems like every time there's a timeline "correction" it just gets more confusing.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

*Wonders if the timeline correction has hit Karpal ?*

remember all that talk by erikson about a resurrection, well if you read closely the nameless one talking about hood mentions that perhaps hood or something else will be born!!!
Frozen worlds hide in darkness,†came the rasping words of the eighth Nameless One, “and so hold the secret of death. The secret is singular. Death arrives as knowledge. Recognition, comprehension, acceptance. It is this and nothing more and nothing less. There shall come a time, perhaps not too far off, when death discovers its own visage, in a multitude of facets, and something new will be born. In the name of Hood’s Warren, I invoke the ritual of release
and barathol might not be kalams dad but he could be his brother

So is Kalam's Relative (????) guarding the first thorne ?
I am guessing that the T'Lan he is about to kick off with are the renegades. (or maybe i was not paying attention as my girlfriend was driving me mad at the time of reading)
Maybe he is not guarding the thorne but he is on its path and they have stopped to sort him out.

Patch,
Thanks for posting the prologue but because of the publishing delays, you have to send me the rest of the manuscript. You see, next year I will be in Africa fighting world hunger and encouraging world peace. I don't have time to do that and read a new Malazan book, so depending on you, I may have to cancel the mission.
Wait! I know what you're thinking. Mr. Erikson is worried that the manuscript is too raw and may damage my opinion of him. I assure you that it will not! Spelling errors don't even phase me (although I must confess, I have little patience for poor word choice.)
So what I need is for you to post an address where I can send you a self addressed stamped envelope. Please hurry! Little Alitash is waiting...

Pretty bad typo. How do you get '22' instead of '10'?

@daze
...i'm sure we can work something out...you'll be in Africa, you say? Cool, I know something about the place...let's see...your efforts to stop world hunger will take up the majority of your waking hours, and you'll be somewhere where there is little chance of recreational electricity, so you'll only be able to access your email...so...I'll send you 5 pages a day (you can email me when you get there) and you can use what precious little time you have to read to fill that time with the 'greatest story ever written.'

First posting so be gentle...
I hate previews. Now I have to catch public transport home with a Big Top in my pants - until 2006! Bastards!
Seriously, more great stuff from a desperately underated author. Take THAT Robert Jordan!

Considering that the First Throne is on Quon Tali, and Barathol is in northern Seven Cities, I doubt a link there. I'm also not sure they'd be the renegades - hadn't the Unbound already headed much further south?
Interesting point: Ahol Tapur is right in the place you'd expect Heboric to go on his way to the otataral isle, in a straight line between Raraku and the otataral desert.

Yeah, thanks for posting it.
Hey, Rodeo, SE base his charcters on the fans!

I agree, its not something to worry too much about. For the most part I'm just curious as to what things in the earlier books we should discount due to the mistake.
I believe SE promised to publish a timeline in something, so presumably there will eventually be an offical version of when events in the series happened - despite his stated joy of playing around with time. We just like trying to weedle out these details sooner.

Sitting in awed silence, I say a heartfelt "thank you" Patch.
Stunned to wakefulness by reading that dreadful yell, what the devil's the matter with you Karpal?
