It seems that they like to play at being human.... there is that passage where Envy talks about Rake spending time as a palace guard somewhere..

It's actually QoD talking to L'oric, Envy was talking about Rake visiting the island of the Seguleh.
"Anomander once spent almost two centuries in the guise of a royal bodyguard... human, in the manner you have achieved."

And let's not forget Mael aka "Bugg", and Sister of Cold Nights aka "Nightchill" :) both of whom are not only Ascendants but Elder Gods as well.

Hey everyone,

A friend pointed out this: In several parts of the books it is being mentioned that Dassem Ultor isn't quite dead. He is being mentioned as having drowned but his body hasn't actually been found. Can anyone elaborate?

The one that drowned was Cartheron Crust iirc. Dassem was supposed to have died in the battle for Y'ghatan. And as far as I know Night of Knives proves he has never actually died.

Yeh he simply went 'missing'

never drowned or anything like that as Roland says.

You'll find that Krul makes a mention of him in MoI when he is talking to Lady Envy as well and his possible importance as to the inadvertant rise of the crippled god.

Didn't both the Crust brothers "drown"? ie Urko/Keeper aswell.

@ Bad

yes both of them did 'drown'
thats why keeper has so many resemblences to Urko and the Captain of the Ragstopper got called Cartheron as well by ones his crey men.

In a nutshell, whenever there is a reference to any of the 'Old Guard' being dead, you may safely assume that they are actually...

a) Ascended;
:) in hiding; or,
c) hanging out under a different name.

- Abyss, thinks Kruppe is really Toc the Elder.

Dassem was defenitly at the last chaining, thats when he broke his chains to Hood because Hood did something with his daughter. This is what made him Desembrea, or at least thats what I think. But there was a Lord of Tragedy before that. This could be Dassem or someone else.

I still think Dassem was already Dessembrae prior to Hood's taking of his daughter :)

" Dassem - his champion - Dessembrae - had grown to rival his power."

that's exactly what i was also wondering about... why would a thousand-years-old ascendant attach himself to a bunch of more or less "normals" (kellanved and his lot) and help create the Malazan empire???

for the same reason Caladan Brood and Anomander Rake attached themselves to the Crimson Guard.. ?

nope... not sure about anything - except that Hood took Dassem's daughter at the chaining, and the words quoted from the book.. and that Brood and Rake were fighting for the Crimson Guard..... :)

During my reread of DG, I just passed the section where Apsalar is channeling a lot of Cotillion's memories.

After sharing things only Dancer would know (Laseen ordering the T'lan Imass into Aren), Apsalar says something like:

"Dancer only trusted two people - Kellanved and Dassem Ultor. And Dassem is dead."

Up to that point, most characters thought Kellanved was dead too.

Just thought I'd bring it up - don't know if it came up earlier.

I don't get it

wasn't the chaining thousands of years BEFORE the Empire??
How could've Dassem been there in that time?
Didn't he refuse Hood in the time of prior to rhe assassination?
And one by one the gardens died

I have an idea!!!!1!1ONE1!!ELEVEN!!!!111!

Can an admin/mod make a sticky for people to add information too for creating an FAQ on the whole series (or maybe one can be made for each book. Then when enough info is in them you can make a locked sticky in the appropriate forums, which can be updated if the entire forum missed a question which everyone always asks (not likely, but still).

Though if people can't even be bothered to use the search function, maybe they won't know what FAQ stands for either. ¬_¬

wait a sec..
So, you're telling me that the second (or third, or whatever) chaining took place during the malazan empire's conquest of the 7 cities?
Or before it?
I always thought that there was only one chainig...
Where did you get the information from?
And one by one the gardens died

Such a sticky sounds a good idea...

Creating such a sticky will prob fit in with the chapter summaries and glossary currently being written so hopefully some will appear soon.... (ish)
