The sale begins tonight.

What are you guys looking out for? As always I have far too many games on my wishlist but I am hoping for some heavy discounts on games like Super Hot, That Dragon Cancer, Axiom Verge, The Flame in the Flood and Galak Z.

I already splurged a lot in the GOG summer sale.

My Steam wishlist is pretty small: Arkham Knight, Stick of Truth and I still don't think I ever caught a good deal on Far Cry 3. Maybe Mad Max, but not any time soon.

Used to have Dying Light there, but it's on GOG now.

Also gonna wait for Origin to give a good deal on DA:i and the new Mirror's Edge.

AoK HD is pretty great. the bonus campaigns DLC are pretty neat. I lost several months to that game last year, and I still gotta go back and play through the "battles" scenarios. Plus, steam workshop has tons of custom campaigns.

Already bought FC3 and Stick of Truth. Arkham Knight is 25 bucks... I'm not sure I should get it now or wait for a later weekly sale.

I've started seriously gaming recently, as I was mainly a strategy nerd before.
My wish list right now:

The Thief series (I don't know if they are worth buying, since they are pretty old)
STALKER: Pretty sure I'm going to buy these all
System Shock: I loved Bioshock, but the graphics on these look horrible.
The Batman series: Going to buy them as they look absolutely gorgeous. I'm a little apprehensive though, as I've heard they are pretty sure.
Vampire: The Masquerade : I've heard a lot of good things about it, although not sure about how good it looks. I'm a sucker for good stories though.
Fallout 3 GOTY: I've heard it doesn't work on Win 10, so not sure about buying this.
Alpha Protocol: I've heard it has a great story.
Crysis: same
Metro 2033: Redux
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series

Jesus that's a long list. I'm open to any suggestions regarding games to add an subtract. If it helps, my current fascination with single player games was sparked by the brilliance that is Bioshock Infinite and also Dishonored. I've been searching for a way to scratch that itch they've created.

Edit: Also Civ 5. I've never played it with DLCs.

Thiefs 1 + 2 are good. plenty of texture packs available to modern em up. May want to look into GOG, as they have better track record with making old games play nice with new systems.

If you haven't played original Deus Ex, PLAY IT! plenty of gfx mods for that one as well. (NB: I was an RTS junkie until I played Deus Ex. It opened the world for me)

System Shock 1 is being re-done with "remastered" graphics. When done, it's worth a look. Shock2 is a truly horrifying game, and once again, plenty of mods to pretty it up. it's like Bioshock, only much, much harder and scarier.

Bloodlines is amazing, but gets too combat tedious towards the middle-end. it's also VERY much an RPG, so without putting LOTS of skill points into combat, expect frustration. It's logical, but it's RPG-logic, which often catches shooter fans by surprise.

Alpha Protocol is brilliant. You only get how brilliant on multiple playthroughs, though. Start off on Easy to get the hang of the boss fight difficulty spikes + minigames. you can increase difficulty in subsequent playthroughs.
-the game also has a lot of bugs that were never ironed out since Sega basically told Obsidian to abandon the game. My personal experience, most of them were in Taipei section of the game. I happened to do that last, which is probably why my opinion of the game is higher than most (I was already enthralled by it by the time I saw really annoying bugs). YMMV a lot.

RE: Batman: Arkham Asylum is a very tight, amazing Batman experience. City went open world: the story was still pretty good I felt, but gameplay may get tedious. Origins had poorer combat, imho, and felt a bit "off". Haven't played Knight yet.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games can be a great experience, but they require A LOT of patience to let the game "click". mods help- check out the "complete" series.

my general recco for all "older games" : if they are available on GOG, i'd get them there. Besides the extras (like soundtracks), GOG gives you a single installer file. If you want to mess around with mods (which is half the fun for the "old-school" games, GOG version makes it easy to have multiple installs and such.
Steam is convenient, for sure, but in some ways I find it too limiting. Plus, no matter how nice, it's DRM, and I always prefer a DRM-free alternative.

just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the tips.

The mods and texture packs are something I hadn't considered. I guess that will make up for most of the old/ugly thing.

Once I've paid for a game, I have absolutely no qualms about acquiring it off less than legal sources if the legal version is less than satisfactory. Although overall I've never had a problem with steam.

I bought Dragon's Dogma on the PS3 but put it down at some point because something better came out, but I really liked it. I've been wanting to buy the PC edition but I won't before it drops below 10 euro.

I was looking out for Mordheim initially but I think the final product looks terrible so it came off my wishlist.

I've seen Arkham Knight as low as 16-18 euro here and there.

My opinion often clashes with Mentalists, because he seems to be fascinated by classic games and the depth, complexity and inspiration they had. I am more interested in modern game design, streamlined gameplay, visuals, etc.

So I'd argue that you completely drop Thief 1-3 unless you want to experience what the classics played like. They are very old and dated in terms of visuals, UI, controls and level design. However their level design is also something that was quite unique originally.

I'd just skip straight to Thief 4. It plays like a cheaper Dishonored. If you don't know the Thief games, T4 is a great smash and grab pilfering experience.

Those two series are old. Their interfaces and game design is pretty archaic. In the case of Stalker I'd say it is just a quirk of Eastern European game design, where they have an obsession with menus and RPG mechanics.

Personally I couldn't get into them but I admit that the remastered System Shock 2 has a great opening.

"They're pretty sure"? Did you accidentally a word there?

I love the Arkham games. If you have the time and inclination I'd recommend playing through all 4 of them, since they offer a great evolution in gameplay and there is an overarching story that is satisfying to follow to its conclusion.

If you do play all 4 I recommend playing Arkham Origins before Arkham City, for a story related reason I wont spoil here.

Keep in mind that a remaster of Asylum and City is coming out soon.

Great RPG, terrible gameplay. It was a rushed game and there are actually gameplay choices and character builds that can make it hard or impossible to finish. I played on easy but still had to stop after I encountered a boss fight that was simply impossible for me to beat with the character I owned.

I really like these games. I imagine Crysis 1 must be antiquated by now but 2 and 3 were great modern takes on FPS games with super powers.

Metro 2033: Redux

Metro 2033 was great but a bit too eccentric in its game design for my liking. The story is awesome but it's a game that is more interested in being authentic to the lore, than being fun to play.

Metro: Last Light on the other hand was a great step forward. One of the better shooters/stories I've played in recent years.

I could not get into the original games. The controls were too weird and the gameplay too antiquated. However the newer games, Conviction and Blacklist, I loved to bits. Admittedly they are more action focused and lenient on stealth, but they are very satisfying to play. I played every single piece of content for Blacklist and all I wanted was more.

Might want to look into games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

The Deadspace series could be good if you liked Bioshocks level design.

Wolfenstein: The New Order has a good story.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a great new entry in the series. There's a new one coming out in August.

Max Payne 3 and LA Noire + GTA5 might interest you storywise.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor is Dishonored-like.

Played through it a couple months ago. No issues what so ever and my rig is getting old. It could begin to chuck a bit when I got into a massive tank battle but generally it ran better and had much better load times on my SSD than it had when I played it with a friend on his PS4.

Apt and I clash opinions because I never experienced the "streamlined" modern gameplay the way it was meant to (on a console), b/c I've been gaming on PC my entire life.

When I discovered Deus Ex in uni and then played Invisible War and Bloodlines, I was basically desperate for more of the same "FPS with powers". coupled with good story and simulation elements that made the world seem to react to my actions and offered other options than just killing everything on the "level".

Unfortunately, such games are few and not that easy to find.

The new Deus Ex (which I played) as well as Dishonored and Thi4f (which I haven't yet) are an attempt to revisit that, in a new paradigm of big budget AAA, including things that "sell". These aren't always bad things, but some changes feel odd, unnecessary and only there to cater to "modern" expectations without actually adding anything to the game (lookig at 3rd person stealth/combat in DXHR here- thankfully, optional, but clearly a "preferred" way of playing the game.

So yeah, in some ways I remain a retrograde. But mostly because they rarely make the kinds of games I've become really interested in, so I have to look for old games exemplifying the design instead.

I value both game design/complexity and visuals. However, the most important part of a game IMO is the story it tries to tell, how well it tells the story, and the theme of the game.
I tried the first thief with the HD mod and it's quite playable (except for the ugly sword). The voice acting though convinced me to buy the others.

I mean my experience so far with eastern european game design has been limited to Witcher 2 and Metro Redux and both of them are quite lovely.

I've been playing Metro 2033 Redux since last night, and honestly it's one of the best shooters I've played. Great story/atmosphere. The best part about it is how fluid the guns are, how beautiful he reloads and gorgeous bullet impacts.

Thinking about Bioshock and Dishonored, I have looked through my Steam library to make some recommendations:

Might want to look into games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

The Deadspace series could be good if you liked Bioshocks level design.

Wolfenstein: The New Order has a good story.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a great new entry in the series. There's a new one coming out in August.

Max Payne 3 and LA Noire + GTA5 might interest you storywise.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor is Dishonored-like.

I've played Mass Effect, and while I loved the story (up until the ending of course), I found the combat sadly repetitive. Dragon Age was extremely boring to me, so I gave up on it.
I've also played DXHR. I liked the story and the world building, although I disliked the design of the last couple of levels. I will definitely play the next one though. (I spent 2 hours trying to save Faridah on pacifist and then gave up on it :D )
Shadow of Mordor was a fun game, but it got way too easy after I learned what was going on. After the posess thing was unlocked it became unplayable-y easy.
I'll play MP3/LA Noir after my current batch of games. GTA V will have to become cheaper before I pay for it though. (that price is stupid)

Overall, Thanks for the help.

I assume there's like a million 2D turn based/platformers on Steam but Child of Light is sort of unique. What aspects of Child of Light did you like?

Something like Ori and the Blind Forest or Valiant Hearts might interest you.

just because we talked aboput it upthread:

SYstem Shock 1 remake is now up on Kickstarter. It's got a playable demo, so you can check out how it looks and feels now.

from the vid I've seen, my only complaint is, the cameras are too slow to alert everyone to your presence. I remeber being completely rterrified by camaeras when I played the original. Also, b/c you had to jump and swing your pipe at them at the same time.
The problem with the gene pool is that there's no lifeguard
