David Gemmells works.
Notably the Troy trilogy and drenai tales.

If you like a bit of old school, Feist chronologically in midkemia/kelewan as far as rage of a demon king. There's another ten books after that but the quality varies greatly. The Empire trilogy is fantastic.

I'm planning on trying Gemmell at some point, and starting with Legend. Are there any books that you would recommend skipping altogether?

To answer TC, I'd also recommend Acts of Caine by Matthew Stover, and the Red Rising trilogy by Pierce Brown.

ECHOES OF THE GREAT SONG is of debateable quality vs other Gemmell work, tho that's deliberate on his part as he was trying a different style out.

This. So the fuck much this.

Can second both of these without hesitation.

Also...

Richard Morgan's TAKESHI KOVACS trilo and LAND FIT FOR HEROES trilo. Both complete and done in three.

Jim Butcher's CODEX ALERA. Six books and done. First is a bit weak but steadily improves.

There's Sanderson's original MISTBORN trilo. He's since continued the series but the first three are a complete story.

Sanderson finished Robert Jordan's WHEEL OF TIME. Opinions may vary, but as a fantasy series that is complete and done, it's worth starting to see whether you like it.

Celia Friedman's COLDFIRE trilo. Original world, crosses sf and fantasy lines nicely.

GG Kay has written a bunch of standalones worth eyetime and money. LIONS OF AL RASSAN and THE SARANTINE MOSAIC are particularly good. TIGANA is not, and for the love of god avoid YSABEL.

Ian Tregellis' MILKWEED trilo... Nazi mutant-commandos vs British spy-sorcerors.

.... but read ACTS OF CAINE.

Fuck.

I'll second all these easily.

Looks like you want recommendations within the SFF field rather than fiction as a whole. I agree with most of the recommendations above, but still don't get why people like Gemmell that much. Blah.

Gene Wolfe - The Wizard Knight series, The Solar Cycle series. The very best writer in all of SFF. His works will shake you subtly and always reward the reread.

NK Jemison - The Inheritance trilogy, a lady suddenly gets pulled into high politics and power struggles involving enslaved gods.

Lev Grossman - The Magicians series, like grown up Harry Potter meets Narnia by way of Kurt Cobain.

Robin Hobb - The Farseer/Liveship/Tawny Man/Rain Wilds/Fitz and the Fool series will be finished in 2017. Fifteen of the sixteen books are already out, which is why I'm including this in the list.

Stephen Donaldson - the Thomas Covenant series is some of the very best writing in SFF - but very difficult for some readers early on due to the way he makes the characters seem real and then does horrible things to them. Absolutely stellar series.

Jacqueline Carey - Kushiel series, on a simplistic level, it's about a lady who basically changes the world by having sex with the hoity toity crowd, but Carey is a very good writer and makes us genuinely care about it. Goofy and sex-positive at its core, yet kinda earnest in its delivery.

KJ Parker - the Engineer series and the Fencer series, Parker loves writing books about extremely morally grey MacGyver types who are good at building things and manipulating events. It's really fun if you're into that type of stuff, yet it is very grim for those who aren't used to that dynamic.

I can definately second Red Rising trilogy by Pierce Brown. I finished this series earlier this week and it blew me away. For me the first books with comparison with Hunger Games actually put me off. If it hadn't been for that I would've gotten round to reading it a lot sooner, it's fantastic. Saying that I've only seen the hunger games films so no idea how good the books are!

For other series: Joe Abercombie has Before They Are Hanged trilogy, with another 3 books that follow on that can be read stand alone if you want, as well as his Shattered Seas trilogy.

The Golden Key duology by Melanie Rawn et al

Divine Cities duology by Robert Jackson Bennett

The Reckoners trilogy by Brandon Sanderson - while I was quite disappointed with this series overall it has been reviewed very well on amazon so you might enjoy it more than I :D

Hmm Id just say if you're hitting the Drenai world break it up. Do the druss novels. Then go to something else, then a few of the stand all s, then something else. If yu read his whole body of drenai world in one go yu might find them a bit formulaic.
Legend is awesome. The Troy trilogy, I just finished rereading again today. Its my favourite trilogy. Of any author

Also, if you're willing to try Warhammer fantasy and 40k there are some completed series within it that are pretty good, e.g. Eisenhorn trilogy, Space Wolves, Ultramarines, read up first though as there is a lot of bad in there too; might as well and include some Star Wars and Star Trek too!
