Wow, I wish I had noticed this thread before.

You're all a well-rounded group of people.

To the OP: read the books or not on your own terms. It seems to be a set of books that you either love or hate :).

Interesting that you guys say the second series is a step up in quality. I only recently finished The Judging Eye but I found it to be a notable step down from the first trilogy. I didn't like how it was more straight forward, but I still enjoyed it and the series has a ton of potential. I look forward to continuing with The White Luck Warrior.

To answer the TC, this is overall one of my favorite series ever...definitely worth trying.

Bakker was under publisher pressure to make TJE more accessible than the first trilogy. Then in TWLW Bakker said screw it and reverted more to the same format as the first series, and it and TGO are much better books (TGO may be his best book to date).

Is he a good storyteller?

No. But only me and QT seem to think so.

Me too Tiste

Indeed. It's one of the only books I have ACTUALLY thrown against the wall.

The second book is the only book I've started and never completed. 3/4 of the way through.

And to stay somewhat on topic, it had nothing to do with what's being discussed. It's because it was the most boring book I've ever held on my hands.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

You're missing out on some truly, truly wild stuff.

He has a way with taking adventures into some seriously cool/creepy places in ways that can be either homages to other great works of SFF or entirely original.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.
