A completely different direction
It is looking good. I like the signs around the eye.
Did you get a new inspiration?

Heh. Alright then. It's not an accident that I've already managed to offend you. You're so eager to be commissioned and get paid but I'm more interested in testing your character and you have failed the most preliminary of tests. It's unfortunate - I think you have talent but to be honest the majority of your stuff is uninspired in my opinion. You do have moments of brilliance but they seem to be few and far between. If you would characterize my interaction with you as in any way browbeating or abusive, I urge you to familiarize yourself with the definitions of those terms and then re-evaluate. I am not a person who spends a lot of time caring about other people's feelings. If I were paying you, I'd be even less interested in your feelings and then you might have reason to be offended. Go level up or something.

I prefer the second Orb to the first...
For the Orb card, I see that as the prominent feature and the second one does that. Don't get me wrong, the first is some nice work but I am drawn to the construct rather than the key feature.
For the second I like how you've started it but it doesn't say to me yet that this is a card of power. I dunno, maybe take the orb from the first and put it in the second. The white radiance suggests judgement and true sight more to me than the red, just my opinion.
Oponn is great/perfect as it is.
For Toc, that looks good so far too. I imagined him - when reading - as having dark brown hair, you look at him and you know he has been through the wringer but has now come out the other side, worn but maintained equipment. Also less of a serious guy, there is a dry humour to him despite everything.
Great work as always.
Edit - below and some more on the Orb card above:
Mal, if you're going to call someones work awful, at least say why. If you're going to be a dick and add nothing constructive then just jog on.

Mal, this comment is unnecesary.
Misteradam is an incredible artist. He's trying ideas and sharing the process with us for feedback. Not every work needs to be a masterpiece, being precious about every art piece stunts the potential of the project. As MrA develops more cards I'm sure the ideas will gel and the final result will work better as a collection than individual pieces.
I can respect your opinion just fine, everyone is entitled to voicing them. You do not need to shift goal posts though after a fair response. This is not about you and I think you're making it far more personal than it has to be. We get it, you dont like it. others do and its up to MrA to adjust it or leave it as is.
Its a malazan project and at the end the result benefits everyone.

Thanks for your support guys! Moving on, here's an evolution for the Orb concept. I agree with you Champ, that the previous one felt more 'Judgement and true sight'. Usually a sword is a symbol of judgement and the all seeing as as true sight, so I've combined those into something I think I'm happy with. Will move on to a final when I get time.

The sword is great idea. This is until now my favourite version. Maybe the crossguard could be a longer. I think it may look good if the sword is dividing the card into four parts.

I also like this version.
He could also go the other way and omit the cross-guard entirely.
I'd also think you could have a few items on the table. maybe coins?

I like that the best out of the three too, especially the gold markings around the edge and how the Orb now looks like a closed eye. Suggests there is more than meets the eye to the card... Ahem...
Nailed the judgement and true sight, nice work.
Edit:
Just made me think of the Sword of Omens, Thundercats HOOOOOO....

For myself, I like the image of the demon-hand clutching the orb as can be seen at the top of the screen between the words "Malazan" and "Empire"

Orb is unaligned card though, correct? Seems the official standard of the Malazan Empire would be rather biased in that context. Unless the deck happened to be Malazan Empire Squad Mage standard issue.
What is not forbidden is mandatory.

Preliminary sketch for The Orb. Moving to traditional medium for this one, will scan and make copies of the drawing, then paint it in oils, I think. The cool thing about working traditionally as opposed to digitally, is that in the end I have a physical copy of both the drawing and the painting.

Thanks. Hope everyone had a good holiday. I haven't been very productive lately on this project, but here is a preliminary sketch for the Knight of Dark.

edit: laying in some tones with coffee. Rake is such a beefcake. Also, my reasoning for having him hold the sword with one hand instead of two is that I think it looks more elegant. The challenges of laying in the values for him are that he's supposed to have jet black skin, on a dark background. Don't want him to look too much like an Edur. Mood of this should prominently be elegance and power. The out of focus imagery that goes above his head in the background was described as a suspended shape. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what you guys think that shape is. I've been leaning toward Moons Spawn or a floating half transparent Darujh....Daru-juh-stan.

edit2: done messing around with it for one night. I'd say it's 60% complete, just have to mess with colors and massage details in where I want them, play with edges etc. I like the idea of using his hair as a design element, keeps it in the card deck realm a little bit. Will explore that style more as I go.

A centaur dragon. Never seen one of those before. What was your rationale for drawing him like that?

It's how he's described in the first reading as the Knight of Dark card. Half human from the waist up, then a dragon below that. I did several sketches where his dragon part was bigger, but it never looked as cool.

I think this equates to Rakes version of Rhylandaras?
The logic would follow he has something between Draconic and human form?
