Really sorry to hear about this Maark, but hey, you found a publisher once, you can do it again!

Damn so that other dude lost his to or was his out already? He'd be big time up a shit creek if it is I'd think. Shitty news to have that taken away for everyone.
I'M that other dude!
It is a whole maelstrom of mess, and unfortunately for Maark it occurred right as he was building steam.
My publication is going ahead as planned. I am to be the last book through the gate and yet my rights revert to me as well. I guess kind of a "Sorry we waited four months and then pushed all the timelines we promised into a three-day margin the week before release because we published a mermaid book instead" kind of thing. Purge of Ashes should be released next week, April 5th, as advertised.

My condolences, Maark, that's really unlucky.
Best of luck with with a diff. publisher.

Good luck! If someone liked it enough to publish, someone else will too! Just keep at it!
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Way to keep up the good spirits about this. I know I'm going to keep watching this space for when you come back from scoring a better deal.

Cheers guys. Incidetnally if anyone works as an agent or knows any agents who are into super dark fantasy (darker than Bakker) please feel free to hit me up.
I had another proofreader come back to me recently after going through it - positive responses again, there's even a discussion post about it in my reading group now (!) which is immensely validating. The general description is some of the feel of Mistborn (mostly the setting) slammed into Bakker and Abercrombie's grimness.

That is sad to hear, I was looking forward to reading it.
I agree, you've found one publisher, it should be doable to find another.

Right. Starting to draft up some query letters with a view to sending a few off tomorrow. I've got some resource for finding agents who are accepting, but if anyone here knows of any who want stuff darker than the offspring of Bakker and Abercrombie, let me know. And call me Pious Augustus.

Been a tad busy of late, but I've just read this thread all the way through, and it makes for some good drama!!
I'm gutted for you Maark mate, after coming so close, but like everyone else has said, you should be able to do the same again with a different publishing house. Just have to persevere, which I'm sure you're already well prepared for.
Insanely jealous though. Writing for pleasure and money is the God Damned dream. Plain and simple.
Good luck with things from here, sending some Geordie luck your way!

You know what, I am a little disappointed in not getting it out, however I'm not gutted over it because I feel that ultimately I made the right decision in pulling out when I did. And the reviews from the people who have read it have all been unanimously positive.
I'm querying agents tomorrow. Going to get back on with Book 2, to boot.
In the meantime I guess if anyone wants to ask questions about the book, feel free. Unsurprisingly I'm always happy to talk about it. And whilst you wait for me to get signed again, go check out Spearmint Joel's new book!

I have been tempted, however the advice I've been given is to seek out an agent first - it means more doors open, and doors that might close permanently if I didn't have one and was rejected may stay open or reopen later.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Cheers SaltMan! I'll send a query off tonight and hope her response is a gentle rejection rather than a visit from Korbal Broach*.
