Got a few questions of my own

1.Can someone help me understand what happened to Fener and why he died or whatever it was that happened to him?

2.Why did Korlat lie to Dujek about Whiskeyjack's Leg?

3.What was the point of two necromancers in the book?

4.Paran seems to think he and Quick ben have slowed down the poisoning of the Warrens to a crawl and this had something to do with Omntose Phellack. How exactly did this happen?

5.Why was Moon's Spawn submerged? Was it deliberate or was Rake forced into it?

1. When Heboric touched the Jade giant with his enchanted hand, it pulled Fener into the mortal world
2. Something to do with not blaming Mallet probably
3. No real point. They are a couple of characters SE has fun with. He has an entire novella series on them
4. When Paran and Quick Ben persuaded Pannion the Jaghut to live inside Burn and spread ice through his warren, they were making sure that the Crippled Gods venom was counteracted by the ice and hence the poisoning of Burn was slowed down.
5. Rake intentionally submerged Moon's Spawn for a surprise attack on Coral

1) Fener didn't die. When Heboric touched the jade giant with his missing hands, Fener got pushed out of his astral plane by Heboric's severed hands which were in Fener's realm. So Fener is now mortal and probably somewhere in the Malazan world. Trake/Treach subsequently took Fener's place as God of War. Fener's fate is RAFO.

2) Korlat did not want Dujek to blame himself for not ordering Whiskeyjack to get his leg mended, as he had planned to do several times.

3) Bauchelain and Korbal Broach rock. Should be reason enough. They also have their own spin-off novellas.

4) The poisoning is like an infection to Burn, which is gradually spreading and getting worse, eventually killing the world. Omtose Phellack is the Jaghut racial warren, which aspect is ice/time. By using Omtose Phellack (from the Jaghut Seer and QB's own skill) against the infection, they managed to freeze/drastically slow down its spread. Compare it to putting a cold compress on a wound or an infection to cool it down and relieve inflammation.

5) Rake deliberately submerged it to hide it from the Pannion Seer and to approach Coral undetected.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Hi all,

I have started MOI and I am currently on chapter six. The questions I ask might be answered in the later chapters, but as I mentioned before, I fear to miss something that has been explained :p Therefore, please write RAFO if they are explained after chapter 6 Posted Image

My first set of questions belong to Prologue:

1) Kilava sends the children to The Rent in replacement of another soul. My question is, if The Rent is sealed with the previous soul, how Kilava could see the Rent and sent the children up? Why didn't the first sealing close the gate?
2) People opened a portal to an alien world and pulled Crippled God to gain more power in order to stop Kallor, am I right?
3) What is the meaning of the "Fall of the Crippled God"? What does "fall" mean? Is it CG's being pulled through the portal?
4) If Kallor is not an ascendant, why people needed a God from an alien world? Who used the power stolen from CG? How come Kallor can be so powerful?
5) Why K'rul needed to fashion a place within him for the incinerated continent? Why within him? What does fashining a place within him means? Did the continent disappear completely from the world like carving out a piece of the land?
6) Why the first soul in The Rent returned to his/her tomb which is heavily warded? Why is he/she not freed immediately (That also happened to Raest, too)
7) Warrens are like different realms. Why did SE especially emphasizes that CG's from an alien realm? What does alien realm means? If I live in this world, wouldn't all Warrens and thus realms be alien to me?

Wow, 7 questions only in Prologue? I surpassed myself

Thank you in advance,

Regards

1. Does putting a band-aid over a wound make it impossible to tell that there is one? If you patch a hole in the wall, how often does it make it impossible to tell there was ever damage? It being sealed only made it look like a regular gate to Kilava, it didn't make it disappear.

2. They pulled down the god to directly destroy Kallor with the cataclysm that would cause. It didn't work, but you know.

3. Because he plummeted to Wu. And yes.

4. There are people who are insanely powerful even before ascending. Kallor is one of them (though of course he's cursed to eternally fail to ascend... to some extent the curse is actually protecting him in a way by ensuring that he continues to live on and fail, though he needs alchemical help to avoid withering away).

5. That will be explained. And only the top layer.

6. Because that's apparently how it works.

7. Alien as in not even related or parallel to Wu as most warrens are.
Laseen did nothing wrong.

I demand Telorast & Curdle plushies.

Thank you Abyss and Andorion, you make my world a lot easier

Since this book is both exciting and confusing, I decided that I should read tor rereads along with the book. I finished the chapter 5 and here are my unending questions :D

Chapter 1 Questions:

None! Well, isn't that an accomplishment for me :p

Chapter 2 Questions:

1) Is CG crippled before or after the fall? The term "fall of the CG" indicates like he was already Crippled.
2) How could QB entered to CG's warren to visit him in his tent? I know he had a tracker but entering a warren must be something harder I guess.
3) Is Burn a living warren? I guess I will learn more later but cannot completely comprehend what is going on here. CG is poisining Burn but how? QB is pulled down by a hand and finds himself in Burn. So, is the warren CG is in the same with the Burn? If not, how can CG poisin Burn?
4) What happens if Burn dies? Is Burn just an entity or is it a God or an Ascendant?
5) Paran is struggling with the Blood in himself. I remember he freed two Hounds from Dragnipur. How the Blood of the Hound blended into him? Was the blood already in him and does he only realize what he already has?
6) Paran mentions "a child screaming in darkness, a Hound howling lost in sorrow, a soul nailed to the heart of a wound". Are these the Jaghut children and the one eyed beast in Prologue?
7) Is becoming a God after Ascendancy give you more power? How does that work?

Chapter 3 Questions:

8) What does being born in a Warren signifies? If it is that important, can a sorceress give birth her child in a Warren?
9) Between Rake and Crood, is there any superior?
10) This question actually belongs to DG but I thought about it when I read Tayschrenn. In DG, Laseen tells Kalam that the killing of Bridgeburners is misguided if I recall the word correctly. What does that mean? Does Laseen want BBs dead or was it simple Tays' plan to get rid of them?
11) If the Great Ravens are "have been honorable guardians of the Crippled God's magic", then when Ravens die, does it mean that a part of CG's magic also die? Does dying of ravens make CG weaker?

Chapter 4 Questions:

12) Do we get to learn why Burn sleeps to dream? What is her dreams? What happens if Burn wakes, will the world torn apart or be destroyed?
13) What is the difference between a House and a Hold?
14) I am not sure I understood "Unaligned" :)
15) I really tried hard to understand the conversation between Paran and Tattersail but I believe I failed :p Holds, Houses, Azath, Power, Aligned and Unaligned... :p

Chapter 5 Questions:

16) After the fall, why people chained CG? Is it possible to kill a God? Have they not forseen the results of this chaining?
17) What is the rank of Thurule? Is it ever revealed?
18) Can entities create Warrens just like Imass created Tellann?
19) Burn's plan is to create a hammer that can shatter the chains of CG's to her to stop the poison infecting her and she chooses to sleep. She finds Brood to do so without caring of people who will eventually vanish due to freeing of CG thinking she can start over. Am I correct?
20) What does First Sword means? If Tool is FS, what does that signify?

Regards

1. How good of shape would any god be in after crashing into a planet like an asteroid?

2. Because QB is a sneaky bastard and good at things like that.

3. Burn is the world goddess, basically. It's more complicated than that, but the Crippled God's chaos is toxic to her, basically. Just read more, it'll become clearer.

4. Burn is a goddess. And her dying would be very very bad.

5. The blood was not already in him before the events of the series.

6. Keep reading.

7. Getting worshiped gives you power. It also imposes limitations on how you can use that power, though, by making your aspect more set in stone. So it's a double edged sword.

8. Weird shit, basically.

9. You mean between Rake and Brood? Hard to say. I'm not sure after even reading the entire series. People will disagree on this.

10. RAFO. This is partly up to interpretation and who you choose to believe.

11. Not sure.

12. RAFO.

13. Holds are earlier and more primitive, and to some degree less formalized.

14. Unaligned: not part of a house.

15. Magic and gods are complicated. The Azath are a mystery even to very knowledgeable characters in the series.

16. For reasons that are explained in the series. And yes, it is possible to kill a god, albeit difficult. And gods aren't omniscient in this series.

17. Don't remember.

18. That's complicated.

19. The hammer is already created. Using it to awaken Burn would create massive upheaval, so Brood is reluctant to do so.

20. It is a fancy title. Basically it means he's the most elite warrior of the Imass.
Laseen did nothing wrong.

I demand Telorast & Curdle plushies.

Hi all,

Here are two quick questions.

  • It is said that Trake died and ascended to true Godhood but when it comes to Kellanved, he did not die and Ascended to Godhood without releasing First Throne. Do someone die or not when he/she ascends or becomes a God?
  • What does "personal Warren space" mean? This is referring to Tool's warren in which Silverfox is re-born.

Regards

1. RAFO
2. There can be weird tiny/small warrens. Dragnipur has a warren inside it, after, all.

Thank you Worry.

Do you also know why Brood keeps Kallor with him and why Kallor accepted a lower rank under Brood? Was it because of the curse?

Regards

Kallor has a wealth of experience and knowledge of military operations and strategy/tactics.

Kallor might not see himself as a lower rank. However, in practice he is one because Brood can mash his head into paste with his hammer.

Keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer, keep Kallor closest?

I don't remember if Kallor considers himself a lower rank or something more like an adviser/resource.

I imagine Kallor sees himself as a sort of consultant.

It's a bit tricky, as there is quite a lot of RAFO involved in your questions. What have you put together yourself so far? You'll learn more about warrens and elder races etc in upcoming books, although there will always be a veil of mystery surrounding them.

Well, I am not even sure what I know and this is how I always feel :p

I learned that Shadowthrone's realm is not an actual realm and a gate to the real shadow realm. It is a splinter of another realm (or I am mostly confused :p ). Don't know what does signify? Moreoever, what Draconus made with Dragnipur is to help Darkness fight Chaos or something like that. And there is the term order... You see, I don't know what to think

Some other things that bother me:

How can the Throne of Shadow be located on a moving island? Shouldn't it be in Shadow realm?
What exactly is a human warren?
What does shattering of a warren mean?

BTW, did Paran bless the Shield Anvil or Anaster? I believe we sill what Blessing means in the later chapters...

I actually also read the TOR rereads along with the chapters but I am still having troubles. So thank you for your help :p

Regards

Shadowthrone's realm is a piece of the shattered elder warren of shadow. Rather than being coherent, the pieces of shadow are sorta drifting around aimlessly. Shadowthrone rules a large chunk of it... but as you read on, you'll find that he is the slipperiest and hardest to pin down of the gods. Like even where he is at any given moment.

As for Dragnipur, you're basically right. It's made to keep Chaos eternally chasing the Gate of Darkness. Darkness is order aligned rather than chaos aligned.

Shattering a warren means hitting it with such unimaginable power that it basically falls apart.
Laseen did nothing wrong.

I don't quite understand how the Fener thing works and how Hebroic's hands have anything to do with it? Also, it is safe to assume Itkovian had nothing to do with Fener getting pushed out of his mortal realm?

Was it not a bit stupid from Rake considering it destroyed Moon's Spawn?

Rake deliberately destroyed Moon's Spawn. It wasn't merely a byproduct of his decision.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Itkovian indeed had nothing to do with it. Remember that Heboric usec to be a high priest of Fener. Whenever a priest of Fener commits an atrocity against his god, his hands get chopped off as a means of excommunication. It interupts the body tattoo pattern, so the priest cannot access Fener's powers anymore. The hands then end up in Fener's realm for the god to use as a conduit to deal out punishment when the priest eventually dies. However, Heboric's hands were severed unjustly, so the ritual was tainted and the hands became like poison in Fener's realm. When Heboric 'touched' the jade statue, His 'ghost hands' got infused with otataral and the power of the jade statue. When he then touched his body tattoo, the power linked up with his severed hands in Fener's realm, which then pushed Fener out into the real world.
