Why does Mael basically destroy the ship, i never got why he as an elder god and friend to the ruling body of Lether, why cant he give a little bit of help in their journey?

He is an elder god and they require an appropriate sacrifice to access power. The sacrifice was the ship and all on her. They knew that when they reached across the ocean to talk to her mother.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

But mael is supposed to be their buddy. He can't just hook them up?

Gods in the Malazan realm have limitations. For example Mael was bound by Mallick for a long time because of the Jhistal worship. This didn't stop him helping Tehol as Mallick had no idea Tehol existed but he was compelled to help Mallick in his scheming a lot. He was finally set free through a general worship of the ocean by other people. Maels connection with Tehol is something he has fashioned without worship, something possibly unique in history. he has done this through keeping his head down and not really performing any huge overt acts of magic. It has been mostly subtle with a few exceptions. But I don't think he could do this type of favours for everybody.

The magnitude of the magic was probably a factor. Long distances and maybe even competing warrens. After all the influence of the Forkrul was pretty powerful
