Pillars of Eternity

From the Obsidian site, Pillars of Eternity "aims to recapture the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of classic RPG's that we enjoyed making" and "will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur's Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment."
I'm addicted. A little over a week ago I wasn't even bothered about it. This game has sneaked up on me and swallowed up all my spare time. I'm currently (according to Steam) 27 hours in, somewhere in Act II but doing mainly side quests at the moment. My main is a lvl 6 Cipher.
Fortunately I haven't encountered any bugs as yet but there's a patch due very soon, possibly today, the details of which can be found here: https://forums.obsid...atch-notes-103/

Started yesterday, barely 2-3 hours in, did a grand total of 3 maps so far.
lvl 2 orlan cipher.
I never got around to playing Baldur's Gate, but I loved Planescape: Torment. So far it's hitting all the right notes.

I've made it as far as the city, gone for a Monk because one of my old favourites was a monk. Chanters are more use than priests so far I find, need to equip a decent tank though. The lack of healing potions really shows up the weaknesses of my old style, running in and throwing bodies into the fray and patching up wounds after just doesn't cut the mustard any more.

Started a ranger, got to level 3, and decided I don't want a ranger. Not sure what I'm going to try now, but chanter may not be a bad choice. Or fighter.

I played but never finished BG, but I can see myself going back to play those again after this.
I've got a Druid in my party now, he's great fun

The patch has downloaded on Steam this evening. Bizarre, but - as I'd had no problems before - I was a bit worried about it in case it caused other problems, but all seems fine so far. I'd been putting off doing the Raedric's Hold quest due to reading about the bug in it but, now it's supposedly been fixed, I've headed back up there.

I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm not loving it the way I do some of its Infinity Engine predecessors yet. The story so far is very interesting, but I'm still feeling my way around the combat mechanics and strategies with everyone's different abilities. Once I'm more proficient with it I'm sure I'll get hooked!
Party so far:
Me - Chanter
Aloth - Wizard
Eder - Fighter
Durance - Priest
Hired Fighter
Hired Druid.

I'm a level 8-9 Cipher, and let me tell you, having two Ciphers in the group is practically cheating. Explored the Endless Paths dungeon under the fortress yesterday -- down to level 13 or something -- but got stuck because I must advance the main quest "before venturing forth."

Blimey, I've only just done level 3 of Od Nua
I'm going to have to stop visiting the Obsidian forum - the whining over there is off the scale. I did encounter my first bug last night, though, in that a couple of doors in Raedric's Hold would not open, weren't even clickable. Apparently this has happened since the patch. Still managed to complete the quests, though, just by taking different routes in and out of the castle. When I went into the dungeon from the floor above, rather than from outside, I came to one of the same doors from the other side and it opened fine. I loved the moral dilemmas the quests involved.

One big gripe of mine is the disengagement system usually prevents you from positioning characters in battle. If I would like to pull back poor wounded Durance, he will die whether he goes or stays, and characters often get into a bottleneck where the only thing they can do is wait for the guy ahead to go down. It's also hilarious when one NPC is chasing another and by some miracle of pathfinding genius they are running circles around a third character. Benny Hill style comedy
On the other hand, the bottlenecks I mentioned can easily be exploited since I made Edér the most resilient bastard in the party (it's also how that Fampyr mini-boss thing in Od Nua Lvl 11(?) went down
).

haven't patched yet, but I hit my first bug in Heritage Hills- Killing Leyra won't update the "Missing Sentries" task.
I still think I need to set aside some time to read the manual, as I'm struggling in combat (lvl 5)
I gave Kano a wickedly good arbalest basically as soon as I met him, and so I've got him and Sagani killing things from behind. Eder and Sagani's pet do the tanking (it's amazing how much damage the fox can soak up). Hivarius and my cipher do the damage, while Aloth tries to be useful, but often ends up doing more friendly magic damage with his insane AoE spells.
I think my main problem is Aloth, and him being such a poncy-eared glass cannon. when his positioning works he unleashes merry carnage. when it doesn't he usually dies 15 seconds into combat.
I need to see if there's any equipment I can get to make him die less.....
So far I've been questing round Defiance Bay, avoiding doing the Catacombs. I'm encountering fights I can't win which are limiting my options.

I'm getting my ass handed to me by the dragon, going to return and do a few more levels of the keep I think and see what other minor quests I can mop up

Haven't beein inot Od Nua yet. I'm in Act 3 of the main quest and I think Obsidian have done a cracking job on the story so far.
Settled on the following as a party and it's working nicely:
Me - Chanter
Aloth - Wizard
Eder - Fighter
Grieving Mother - Cipher
Durance - Priest
Sagani and Itumaak - Ranger and Arctic Fox companion.
To say rangers got so much poor coverage for being useless in the game, I've found Sagani really good to have around!
Is that the dragon in the cave where you find the burning stone thing? Took me a few tries to do that!

I really want her in my party, mainly because her personal quest seems to be the most interesting, but she wasn't doing enough for my liking. I'm using Hiravius at the moment and he's a lot of fun, plus he can do a few healing spells which adds to what Durance can do. I don't have a Chanter at the moment, either - I dumped Kana in favour of the Paladin, whose name I can't remember.
I'm still in Act 2, been doing side quests for ages. Did the dungeon beneath Dyrwood Village this afternoon - that was fun.
Re disengagement, when I need to I have my Cipher cast his 'Mental Binding' spell on the engaged enemies and it seems to work pretty well, allowing the melee fighters to get away/reposition.

Yeah the burning cave one. Was made a lot easier by playing elsewhere long enough to meet the dragon hunter.
I'm running with me as monk, Eder, Durance, Aloth, Kana, Grieving Mother. If I keep Aloth (and whoever else is nearly dead) back from fights he tends to last a good time and deal out some major damage.
I can't help but look at the fingers rising from the ground in Caed Nua and think of the Jade Statue in the desert...

Ah, I never met the hunter I don't think. Still, took a few goes. I keep Aloth and Sagani back as ranged (Aloth has a pistol for me) and it seems to make him a good bit less squishy as you say.
Aaaah, I can't wait for someone to catch up to Act 3, it's so good

I've got him holding a rod at the moment, sure I have a spare pistol around somewhere in my stash. Along with 200 shields, 350 daggers, 75 swords, 80 spears... (oh god it's an infinite bag of holding isn't it)
I'm not even sure where the dividing lines between acts are - I've not yet gone to Twin Elms or whatever if that helps?

The patch fixed the Leyra bug, although it took me like 15 tries to replay that fight again, until I said screw it and stopped trying to spare the novitiates first.
May actually get to Woedica's temple tonight. Unless I get sidetracked checking out the Vallian buildings- I think that's the only part of Defiance Bay I haven't checked out yet.

Leyra died with 2 guys left alive for me and neither regained their senses so I slaughtered them - first encounter was post-patch.
I'm going through Cliaban Rilag right now and at level 9 I'm pretty much walking through the monsters like they're mist (so far)
