Attempted a boss multiple times, Rom the Vacuous Spider, kept smashing me with all his minions.

When you respawn and realize your blood vials aren't at twenty, they're at 3. That you're going to have to go on a big ass hunt just to be ready to take him on again.

I just curled into the foetal position and lay for for a while...

That's the worst thing... Having a long fight and very nearly winning is worse than getting taken out quickly as by then you've used everything up.

Just killed blood starved beast and had a trip through the workshop area and streets below. I'd run out of health by the end. Managed to get to a lift and open a new gate to escape. Goddamn crazy wheelchair guy had a flamethrower!

Also took a weird trip to an area with giant pigs in it that I can't get back to, despite lighting a lamp there.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

You probably can go back, is it Yahar'gul? This actually took me ages to work out but the first headstone is only for Yharnam. The other ones going up the stairs are for other areas. I spent ages doing some massive runs to bosses since I couldn't get to the lamp I wanted haha.

Yes that sounds like the place. I got killed by a Snatcher, appeared in a jail, found a woman crying in the basement, then worked upstairs to the lamp, which I lit. Then explored a bit to get some loot, then went back to hunters dream.

Now the lamp doesn't appear on the list, so i got myself killed by the same snatcher as before.. but didn't go back there. Probably have to do something else first I guess.

I still need something to make the altar work with the chalice.

Use the other headstones to go back there, there are four of them. The one you've been using only shows locations in the city itself.

Defeating the Blood-Starved Beast will let you do chalice rituals.

The altar inside the house can be activated by beating the Witch of Hemwick, and lets you use runes.

Ah, forgot to check out the other headstones.

I've defeated the Blood Starved beast, and collected a bunch of runes, guess I need to find the witch next.

Yeah, the runes seem to act like rings from DS in this one, giving you special abilities that you can swap out.

if you go left before the boss fight with Vicar Amelia you should find her area.

Ha, Hemwick is awesome. I thought it was just a short side area, but it just goes on and on.

Various things, increase drop rate, max health, heal with visceral attacks etc.

It's basically a small buff that you can swap out.

I'm pretty sure you can equip three or four at once. I think the fourth might be a different type, I've not found any of those.

Just killed vicar amelia, followed swiftly by the hemwick witch, so I can now use runes. You can use several at a time right? With a +5 spear, 3 blood crystals attached to it plus some runes, I feel like I'm getting somewhere.

I still haven't figured out the chalice though - where does that come into play?

Not sure where to go next; found a forbidden forest but died in it before I found a lamp. Haven't killed the darkbeast yet either.

Woot! I made it past bonfire and killed the 3 dogs that killed me last time!!! Now I'm looking at 2 even bigger dogs....where's a fucking lantern???!!!

Those two bigger ones are the werewolves I was talking about. After them is an ogre or some shit and then the first boss, the Cleric...after you kill him the next lantern shows

Ed: I made past bigger dogs and saw a lantern in background. Opened the gate to it only to figure out its the 2nd lantern. I'm happy I made it that far in one shot. My heart was pounding

Seriously, after I defeating a boss last night I could feel my heartbeat pounding in my neck. This time I kept my cool right at the end, and instead of seeing that last remaining bit of health and screwing things up, I kept back and looked for a decent chance.

I get a proper adrenaline rush from moments like these.

BK - good job finding the gate! That's the gate I mentioned earlier. If you head back through there, into the building, you can farm wheelchair guy for bullets, wolves upstairs, and shortcut to Cleric Beast.

T: the gravestones opposite the ones used for fast travel are used for chalice rituals. They involve randomly generated dungeons you go through with a boss at the end. There's high tier upgrade items, runes and weapon variants with different gem slots to be found, in addition to other chalices for getting harder dungeons.
BK: there seems to be some "magic" but it's definitely toned down. I've found to items that function as spells, but only two of them, one that increases dodge speed and another that buffs your weapon. They consume bullets to use and scale off the arcane stat, which I'm dropping a few points into so I can actually use them.

Traveller, the target (L3) advice was INVALUABLE! I was finally able to beat The Cleric last night, and get the next Lantern lit! Woohoo! So thanks for that.

Now I'm trying to figure out where to go next.

You really NEED that evade move. It's good for rushing in close as well as sidestepping. (Quite satisfying standing motionless while a giant wolf prowls right up - then neatly sidestepping when it attacks, and taking it out)

Have you been down the path past the caged dogs yet? Or smashed the crates on the bridge near the Cleric - there's a ladder down into the sewers.

Yeah, I made it through all that, but it's down in the sewers where I get lost/stuck. Most recently I took out all those zombie things lying on the floor in a group...after that my wife came home and I had to stop playing...but that's about where I am.

If you didn't come down it already, climb up the ladder by the pig, and head left at the top to activate the lift. It will give you a shortcut back.

Also, you can run past the pig.. you're getting close to Father Gascoigne.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I know. The late father did not deal well with a certain item. But there and then, the first time walking down the tunnel, it did not go well for me.
