Just read the news that Terry Pratchett has died. I remember the shock when his diagnosis of Alzheimer's was made public. Seems like only yesterday. The world of fantasy has now lost that amazing mind for good. RIP Terry

Utterly gutted. Sort of met my wife because of Discworld. Went to see him when he did a pre-screening of his documentary on assisted dying a few years ago is Sheffield. A great writer, a great human being. Rest in Peace, Sir Terry.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

For those Malazan forum members who haven't read Sir Pterry's books, they are wonderful. Brilliant and fun, full of biting satire upon social problems and individual flaws and above all, compassionate for the people, animals and world we live with.

He really was worth all the hype and he tried so hard to continue working through the Alzheimer's.

The blue of infinity is where he belongs.

My dad got me into pratchett a couple years ago and I have enjoyed his books ever since. The world will be a duller place with him gone.

Can't believe it. I really can't. I knew he was sick but...

I first picked up Discworld when I was 17. Maskerade. I knew nothing about Discworld or Terry Pratchett. I didn't know what I was reading. I thought it was a strange type of murder mystery. Then I read the part about Death trying to get a swan to sing a literal Swansong. I started laughing. And I never stopped. Reaper Man, Guards Guards, one book after the other, and I never looked back.

When the Reaper Man finally came for him, the world lost one of it's greatest writers and satirists. He taught me to think critically.Rincewind, Granny Weatherwax, Vimes, Death.....so many characters. They practically defined my undergraduate years. Wordplay, wit, action, it was all in a days work.

He will be missed.

This has hit me far more than I thought it would. I'm really quite upset.

I think this may be the first of the authors I'm personally invested in for years and years and books and books...has passed away.

The first Pratchett I remember reading was "Feet of Clay", which was probably eight or nine years ago now. Since then, I've read a lot of his work, and it's always made me happy for having read it. I can't think of any other author who has made me smile so often. Damn.

I... pretty much grew up with Terry's works.

First read Colour of Magic when i was 8/9 (25 years ago or more) been reading them ever since. Met him a few times at signings, and actually learned a fact from him at one of them (the origin of using the phrase "John Hancock" to ask for a signature)

It's a minor thing, but at that point he must have been signing books for 2/3 hours easily, maybe more, and was still active/alert enough to impart a bit of wisdom and personalise the meeting, which meant a lot to me.

Although i've stated elsewhere that i think the last few books haven't been up to his usual standards, it must be remembered his standards were VERY high to begin with. And i'll genuinely miss reading new Discworld stuff every year or so (I know Rhianna has been left the Discworld in the will, but that's no guarantee she'll write more, and even if she does I'm not sure if i'll read them tbh)

All in all, it's a sad day.
meh. Link was dead :(

Truly gutted by this, has been one of my favorite authors for so long I can't believe I will never have the joy of picking up a new Terry Pratchett Discworld Novel again :sofa: I will always remember his wit and humor which had me laughing right the way through my teenage years. Rincewind is still probably my favorite character of all time. Rest in peace and thank you for all the wonderful words.

I have been meaning to start some his books for the longest time now and I think this might push them way up the queue. Where is a good point to start? I have a bunch of them on Kindle and will post the list later...
