I wanted to go first and pick hydrans... I've owned this game for 2 or 3 years now, played it loads of times but somehow I've never played a game as hydrans!

Also as some motivation, I've been modding another game of eclipse online with my boardgame group from bath across multiple timezones, only 6 players but after just over a month we finished round 5 today, so this game can be relatively quick

Terran or Magellan are the most straight forward. Eridani and Orion take discipline to play successfully. Exiles, I have yet to see anyone play them effectively. Lyra takes some planning for the shrines but a good defensive race.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

My second and third choices were Descendants of Draco and Machenema..... Now I'm reviewing the expansion races again to see if I think I'll be able to manage them. Otherwise I'll likely go with Terran Directorate

Solid Choice taking the Eridani out of the selection pool. Eridiani in the hands of a skilled player are a tough out.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

Where is info about the last race pair? Separatists/Guardians?

They are just Terran and Magellan. Same stats as the other Terran and Magellan races.
