I'm debating whether or not I want to make another attempt at that double-ancient hex this round or bunker up and get ready to try to keep CF out of my territories. His options, now that he's allied with Tatts, are to either go after alliance-less me, or work with Tatts to take on IH and Tapper, methinks. So I'm debating whether I take the risk of CF shoving some of his fleet up my backside while I attempt the double-ancient hex, or if I just get ready to be a problem for him to take.
His ships all have such high initiative that the only real defense I could mount would be to pick up Positron Computers (assuming Tapper doesn't take them, which I'm not confident about, I mean, why wouldn't he?) and load them up with Plasma Cannons onto my starbases to give them almost guaranteed hits AND first shot against his ships. But to do that and keep them effective, I'd need to spend all my materials and money for turns on getting them bulked up and built.
Gah, my brain hurts. Having realized that Tapper will probably take the Positron Computers, I have to rethink my whole strategy now anyway. Hrmmmm.....
As I'm second to last in turn order I've basically shelved trying to figure out what to do until I see what people have left me with in terms of tech. I've already wasted many an hour spinning my wheels when I still don't know what will be available when my turn comes around.
Yeah, but I only have Tapper ahead of me. I figure he'll take the last of the two Positron Computers at least. Of anything else I can afford and that would be at all useful to me, he can't clear anything of import, so I've basically just got to plan what Research I get to work with this round.
At the moment, it's looking like Phase Shield might be my most useful research. It won't do anything for my initiative on any of my useful ships, but it'll certainly make it more difficult for anything to hit me. Plus it'll leave me with enough science to trade for an extra material so I could potentially build 3 starbases if I need to.
The question then becomes, do I bulk up the starbases and just hunker down to protect what I own this round, or do I upgrade the cruiser schema so I can throw a cruiser that's almost guaranteed to hit and destroy an ancient as its first salvo and an interceptor with potential to destroy the second one before they can even shoot, while leaving enough resources for me to reaction build a starbase.
Problem with that is that one starbase isn't going to do much to deter CF, and if I spend time upgrading the cruiser, my starbase won't be very powerful anyway.
