I have added a help page and I am looking for someone who is not registered on the Wiki as yet, to try it out.
Can you go to the Wiki homepage
http://malazan.wikia...ki/Malazan_Wiki
There is a section where we recommend changes to give users a better viewing experience (located just above the image)
Pretend you have just arrived and want to follow that recommendation.
Follow the instructions and come back with feedback as to how easy/difficult it was to follow those steps and whether I need to add/change anything.
Thank you very much

Are you referring to the bit that says "RECENT CHANGES"? Because that just seems to be an edit log.

The bit Egwene wants tested is this part, I presume:
For an optimal viewing experience, we recommend using the Monobook skin.

Why's Monobook so much better?
EDIT: And is it not possible to just change the default layout to Monobook?

@ Sombra and Jade Raven - Yes, the bit Jade Raven has highlighted is the bit I am referring to.
@Whisperzzzzz - If you change to MonoBook and also change the ad preferences, it makes the Wiki look much more like Wikipedia. The layout is far clearer and it's worth it just to have the search box in a much better place.
I am attaching a screen shot of the main page in MonoBook - don't know how to down-size it.
Unfortunately, we can't override the default.

The questions have given me the idea of adding screen shots to the help page so users can see the difference side by side.

I'm sorry for hi-jacking this thread, but I don't have a wiki account and there's something there that's been rubbing me the wrong way for a while now, and that's the assumption that Iskar Jarak is Whiskeyjack's real name (to be found in the last paragraph on Whiskeyjack's page). It isn't. The books directly say so.
Here's a quote to prove it:
I've been seeing this bandied around the interet for a while now, but I'm too lazy to make an account just to change that. So if someone would be so kind..
Here's a quote to prove it:

Where does the ad revenue go?
From Wikipedia: Wikia (formerly Wikicities) is a free web hosting service and a Wiki hosting service for wikis. The site is free of charge, deriving its income from advertising, and publishes all user-provided text under copyleft licenses. Wikia hosts several hundred thousand wikis using the open-source wiki software, MediaWiki.
Hope that answers your question

Thanks for pointing that out, Puck. I have wondered about this myself, however, the quote isn't actually evidence of the two not being the same. It is only evidence of Toc not knowing of any connection. I'll open a new topic on the General board and maybe we can get some more evidence together.

When I originally put that message in (which only shows to people using the wikia/oasis skin) it pointed to this page. It explains everything so well I couldn't be bothered replicating it at the time.

Wikia is a commercial operation; they are a business, but it's free to use and at the start they were better than they are now, so yeah...

You don't need to sign up to edit. Just click the edit button and go.
There are advantages to signing up, but editing is not one of them.

I have added the link for the Star Wars wiki to the help page as a back-up.

Would still love to hear from someone who has followed the help link. Also overall feedback on ease of log-in etc. We are always looking to make it easier for people to find their way around.
