Don't do it... or read like one book and come back.
You WANT the series solid in your headthing going into 4 and 5.

In theory book 6 is late this year but covid's done a number on the publishing business so who knows? ...hence you could be waiting a long time.

Doesn't matter, 4 n 5 read great together. I wont say 5 doesn't leave us hanging somewhat, but it ends at a point that's liveable.

And honestly, 5 is just amazing. Like MoI level amazing.

I thought it was a very exciting finale. I can understand some complaints with a narrative choice at the end, but I can overlook that.

I doubt book 6 will be released this year. Book 5 was supposedly almost done by the time 4 came out, and it got delayed a year. And he didn't start writing 6 until after 5 was released, and there is a lot to wrap up. This followup trilogy is much more complex than the OT.

I'd jump right into Iron Gold, but you do you.

You're right I don't want to leave too long but I feel like I need a breather... I have the earbook of World War Z and I have heard it's amazing and it's relatively short so I may go through that before starting the second trilogy. What a sublime series though, it just kept ramping up the insanity every time I thought I had a grip on things!

I thought the YAness was only attributed to it because of a few similarities in concepts with books like H.Gs. Get through that initial familiar start up, and it just.. accelerates.

You're in for a treat.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Red Rising is very Young Adult. Short chapters. Teenage characters in roles you wouldn't expect them to be in at their age. Decidedly tropish, with lots of archetype characters. A protagonist who is coming of age and trying to figure out who he is. And all of this framed in the way it's written.

...but only for a chunk of the first book.
I'd say by the end of 1 we're in non YA territory and staying there.

On pg 151. Fuck me they didn’t do that in Harry Potter.

Hee... I had the same reaction. It was my 'oh this is NOT YA' moment.

I'll be interested to hear what you think about book 2. Pretty much everyone agrees that shit escalates, and that book 2 is a better representation of what the series is like.

Bk 2 pg 206
Spoiler

Pretty sure a lot in these books work more on the rule of cool than sense, some is clearly unlikely and certainly impossible under the currently known laws of physics.

Still enjoying the books a lot most of the time.

Was anyone else not feeling bk 3 as much? I’m completely stalled out about halfway through on pg 275 for close to 2 weeks now. Yikes

I remember it being more uneven than book 2 and slowing down a bit in the middle. But overall it was my favorite of the original trilogy with and it gets really good towards the end.

I don't know, the only section I thought it was slow was when they were travelling through the snow. Otherwise I thought the book was great.
