Ok good to know, thanks

Just to make sure worry; I'm not quite comfortable with Kovacs scenes either.

If you like Morgan, you'd be cheating yourself of some great books not to read LFFH for that reason. As a general approach, there's nothing wrong with reading things you're uncomfortable with... Sf and fantasy SHOULD make the reader uncomfortable sometimes.
On the ESL front, and because you haven't read them yet, consider David Eddings' THE BELGARIAD. It's utterly possible you'll find it too young adult for your tastes, but sinceyou're working on the reading English thing and you enjoyed the Drizzt books, you might get a kick out of these. Plus he writes some great characters and massive battles.

I agree with Abyss, Eddings is a fun fantasy read.

Since you stated that you like the gritty fantasy style, I do think Abercrombie is an author you will enjoy. I also suggested David Gemmel's Drenai series (Legend is book 1). Has anyone suggested Matt Stover's Acts of Caine yet?

Rake and Elric are similar, but yet delightfully different.

I'll also endorse Eddings, though some of the grounds may be nostalgic. Also Gemmell's Drenai series, but everything I've read by Gemmell is at least good and my favourite book is his stand-alone Echoes of the Great Song (Dark Moon is another very good stand-alone). Rigante series is also defintely worth checking out.

If you are still reading this, I will back track on one of my previous suggestions. The Nightangel trilogy by Brent Weeks is still something I definitely recommend, but the further I get into his second series (the Lightbringer series), the less I enjoy it.

For anyone still checking: Tried out pratchett yet? He's not as heavy as most authors in here, though he does have his moments. I'd recommend Small Gods as a good starter, even though it is a story line on it's own. Lots of commentary of the nature of religion/faith, and of course the usual humour.

What is that? I'm reading 3 now and have loved it all.

I think I spoke too soon. I liked the first book, but there were some parts in the early and middle parts of the second that annoyed me and made it look like the series was going downhill. That trend reversed itself by the end of book 2. Book 3 is hopefully waiting for me on Christmas morning.

Late to the party, I'm trying to re-teach myself German at the minute, and am aiming to try read a novel in German that I know pretty well to assist me. Currently Audio booking Der hobbit, and as I know the book so well even though my vocabulary isnt up to following they story remotely, the few bits and pieces I do know mean I can still figure out what part of the story I'm at, and from there extrapolate other words meanings.
So, i guess I'm saying, pick a book you know really well in French, then listen to/ read it in english and see how much easier you find the translation, rather than going into something cold and risk missing a lot of subtext, hope thats sound advice :The Force:

on a reco - Anythign by Gemmell definitely, especially his Troy trilogy (aren't we all surprised by that reco from moacros)

Well I'm surprised. heh. Never read them. Don't know what Macros means.
