Also being discussed in the groove thread - http://forum.malazan...ost__p__1156173 (For now, will leave things as they are but heads up I may merge the threads later)

Yeah, the CBC article (http://www.cbc.ca/ne...orial-1.2808710)'s comment section is horribly infuriating and stupid.

God bless there aren't civilian injuries and go get'em Canada. That is unacceptable.

We gotcha backs.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

As of right now, there are three suspected shooters.

One person shot a soldier who was guarding the War Memorial in the back around 9:30am. That soldier is now dead. Shooter seems to be at large now.

One of the shooters got into Parliament and was shot by the Sergeant at Arms (there's a video out there of this shooting).

There's another shooter at large, with possibility of violence near the Chateau Laurier and the Rideau Centre.

All of downtown Ottawa is locked down. I work in downtown Ottawa, as do a few cousins of mine, and none of us are allowed to leave the buildings.

They're saying the Rideau Centre bit was a false rumour now. Most news reports look like they've dialed it back down from 3 suspected shooters to 2 (with 1 already dead).

Lots of super-cautious (perhaps overly cautious) building lockdowns going on - even out in Stittsville! But better safe than sorry, I guess. Schools are back to normal schedule (including sending kids home at the normal times/methods).

Crap, never thought to check the inn. Go ahead and delete this and/or merge, but I'd suggest the DB is a better spot for such a serious topic.

I wonder which middle eastern country Canada is going to bomb back to the stone age over this?

Oh wait...

The Inn is probably more appropriate for the immediate reaction, while the DB is probably more appropriate for the post-incident discussion once things settle. So I'll leave the Inn posts where they are for now and later on merge/copy any from the Groove thread that should be in here into this thread.

That's the kind of comment I was referring to on the CBC comment section. They haven't even details of either shooter, much less drawn a connection to the middle east.

I see why folks think that there's a connection, and it could very well be the case, but better to wait before starting the discussion, no?

EDIT: retracted...I interpreted Obdi's comment the wrong way

It's comments like this that make me sad for the human race. There's no confirmation as of yet that this is related to anything of the sort. For all we know, this could just be a random crazy. But no, that's fine, let's just assume it's the terrorists. *sigh*

Odds are that they are home grown terrorists not from a middle eastern country. Personally I want it to be Eco terrorists because of the oil sands.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

I find it odd that people think I'm being racist, instead of giving a backhanded compliment to Canada suggesting that they wont go invade random countries because of the activities of a few extremists.

It reads a lot differently than how you meant it -- seemed to me you were flippantly commenting on what the reprecussion of all this would be, which I felt was hardly appropriate.

I get what you meant now. Criticism from me retracted above. B)

Same. What you meant is not how I read what you said. Thanks for clarifications.

The photo of the female passerby citizen who attempted to give CPR to the soldier who was shot first at the War Memorial makes me super sad.

It's nice to see that average citizens can and will jump into action when needed...but it's really sad that she wasn't able to save him. B)

It riles me the hell up that a guy who was standing HONOUR GUARD at the cenotaph...got shot in the back by a coward.

Man that dude died? Tragic.

Any ideas as to who/why? Doesn't seem the sort of thing that happens in Canada.

Don't worry Obdi, I got what you meant straight away. XD

Though if the comments on other sites have been less sarcastic I guess I can see how people might have missed it here.

Deceased gunman has been identified as Michael Abdul Zehaf Bibeau, apparently a Canadian of Algerian descent but born in Canada, who was known to police...and was one of the people whose passport was seized in the last few days as a "high risk traveller"...same deal as the guy who a few days ago ran down military guys in Quebec (and was shot by police)...so this seems to be at least organized enough to have ticks in a few boxes, and one of those boxes is the "high risk traveller" thing.

That's why you didn't get the post.

Ottawa police just sent out a fresh statement, full central downtown core lockdown reinstated moments ago.
