Ok, I am dying to know, is this for real in the United Kingdom? And other than the VAT, why is Jaffa such a big debate?

It's not a big deal as far as I'm aware. I do have very vague memories of there being a debate about whether they were a cake or a biscuit years and years ago - it was about what aisle of the supermarket you should be able to find them in.

The debate IS to do with whether or not VAT should be charged on them.

In the end Mcvities (the maker) made a large jaffa the size of a cake to prove the point.

And, consumerism being what it it, they eventually started making them for sale:

bit about VAT and the large version

As far as I'm aware, which isn't very far, the distinction lies in the state the product reaches when it goes stale.
As a rule, biscuits go soft, and cakes go hard. That was McVities defence iirc.
Not sure wether this helps....

This is a MASSIVE issue here thanks for bringing up such a sore subject. The war has now raged for 6 years and while both sides are desperate for peace, neither side will budge an inch. The top scientists on the side of the "Cakites" (tall, chiseled heroic warriors, huzzah!) are currently working on a top secret project "Operation Tea Dunk" that will soon have the "Biscuitians" (foul smelly terrorist, boo!) On the run. War will be over, the land can return to peace and we can start to mourn the millions of dead that are the result of this conflict.

Tl;dr no-one really cares that much what they are but they are delicious.

The only issue I've had as a Brit having emigrated is that I seem to apologise for... everything. I probably use the word 'sorry' at at least twice as much as any other word.

When this is pointed out to me, I naturally apologise for it.
