Just for those watching this.
The "Sudden Departure" event is never explained in the book. It's made point by Perrault that the point of the story is the character interactions after that event...and the event itself is nothing more than a catalyst. So you never find out why.
Apparently Lindelof has stated that he refuses to budge on this portion of the adaptation, and that the show will also not ever explain the sudden departure. So audiences will have to suffice themselves with the character interactions, and don't expect a supernatural "reason" for the rapture.

Thanks QT, I had not gotten around to checking on the book. I just looked at Amazon and it has almost as many 1 star reviews as it does 5 star. Looks like people either love it or hate it.
There has to be something weird going on, right? The weird thing with the pigeons and the red flashing lights.... The dad that is talking to someone and seems to have information about events... the guy that hugs the pain away... I don't need an explanation about where they went but if they don't have at least something to say about the strange going ons I might be pissed.

HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

The spoiler ruination of that post is unforgivable. Don't want to say "what an asshole" but, what an asshole.
Agree about the Knick. HBO aired the first episode and hooked me. I don't get Cinemax, so will wait until it's released to blu-ray.

I enjoyed Knick also. Cocaine ftw lol
Great first episode, I'm sad that HBO won't be showing the rest. For some reason I'm really drawn to 18th/19th century Dramas set in Urban Cities like NY or London.

I can understand the reasoning for this, without the "Why" of the Departure you wouldn't have all the internal and external conflict in the story. Everyone's looking for answers or guidance, that's the main plot for many of the POV's isn't it?
One question I have though is how does the author and/or writers continue to explain the purpose of those that were "Chosen" (like the old police chief who hears voices) without explaining the "Why" of the departure? I guess its RAFO for most of this series(Which I don't mind, after all we are all huge fans of Book of the Fallen which is one giant cliffhanger lol) and I can't help but think this is one of those shows that will continue to lose viewers as the season progress's and more realize that they won't be getting the central question "WHY". I personally hope for a complete series that gives ample time for the writers and author to tell the full story.

As much as I hate to have to use the negative rep option I thought your post was a bit unfair to those who were looking to this thread for an idea on whether to watch the show or not. I'm not trying to punish you for your opinion I just think a reason or explanation on why this show "has no hook" would better serve to explain to those who might be deterred by your quick judgement, seeing as how you didn't even finish watching the Pilot or give ample reason why you thought the show was not worth watching I thought the comment was premature and not sticking to the topic of the thread which is the discussion of the show. This is actually the first time I have used the negative rep button and I admit it might have seemed harsh to you or embarrassing to have a -1 next to your comment and for that, in the future I will probably just leave the little red button alone lol.

So yeah what was he supposed to understand? I thought maybe I was just really tired when I watched it and missed something. I know what the people in white are doing, they got those creepy bodies and are going to put clothes on them and put them in people's homes etc. Just a total asshole thing to do.
They keep hinting that "something" is going to happen. If nothing major does I am going to be pissed.

That being said, this last episode was FANTASTIC. The previous episode set up the drama, but this episode made it worthwhile.
Also, I still dislike everyone I did before, I just dislike them less now.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Yeah that unborn baby was a total surprise. I knew he was cheating but I had no idea she vanished right in the middle of sex that had to just fuck him up. At first I thought the episode was boring but it pulled together nicely.
Spoil that, please.
