Does this need its own thread?

Meh, why not?

So the first episode of this dropped last night on Netflix. NOTE: It has not been dropped whole season at once like HOUSE OF CARDS.

And for a TV series based on a movie that I didn't think NEEDED retelling...man I was actually impressed.

TV allows for flashbacks and fleshing out of characters moreso than the movie allows which might give us a richer experience.

DJ Cotrona is doing his best George Clooney impression as Seth...and I'm not yet sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

It has one bonus: The guy playing Richie isn't REMOTELY as irritating as Tarantino was.

The show is Robert Rodriguez behind it, and so it would seem to have the same storytelling core...which will help it fly.

A lot of dialogue and beats from the first half hour of the film are in there (Richie getting shot in the hand)...

And for me, I always felt that the film only REALLY got interesting at the end when you realize how long these Vamps have been active in Mexico...so the possibilities for blowing open the worldbuilding after that is high.

Anyways, both the Mrs. and I quite enjoyed the first ep, for what it was.

Also, Don Johnson as grizzled Texas Ranger FTW.

Anyone else watch it?

Yeah, I'm going to give the first episode a chance. It it airing here in the states on something called the "El Rey Network", which I believe was started by Rodriguez. The original film wasn't all the great to be honest, but was fun enough. I don't have much hope this will be anything great, but hopefully fun/interesting enough to keep me wanting more. We'll see.

What is the premise of the show? Is it prequel or sequel? Or an alternative story where the brother doesn't die?

Is it about vampire slayers?

From what I gather, season 1 will retell the story from the original film, but is supposed to expand on some of the events. Per Rodriguez, the platform of a television show will allow him to do this. Then season 2 is supposed to delve into territory beyond the ending of the movie.

If this is true, then I can see where season 1 will be sloooooooow going (if the season culminates with the human/vampire slaughter at the Titty Twister).

There was a "making of" for the series on the El Rey Network and in a montage the crotch Gatling gun can be seen, so yes. Also in the montage, a quick shot of the band that plays in the the titty bar. One of my favorite lines from the movie (when the Titty Twister is revealed to be a vampire lair) comes from the lead singer of the band: "Fuck you very much! Goodnight!"

it's that level of respect for the source material that tells me this will be a superior, sophisticated television production, no doubt on par with House of Cards, Game of Thrones and True Detective!

The pilot has a prologue sequence that takes place in the long past where what look like Aztec shamans throw a girl (probably the stripper character Santanico Pandemonium, unless I miss my guess) into a pit full of snakes, and a huge one goes down her throat...not sure how much that has to do with the Vamps, but probably that was her making into a demon?

Anyways, because the rest of the episode consisted of retelling about the first 15-20 minutes of the movie...I'll guess that the movie material is going to be filled out heavily with side and backstory that will flesh out the world.

Basically this COULD be BUFFY TV series style...b-movie remade by the same creators on TV...but better.

I'm in for at least a few more eps.

Fixed.

Indeed, and considering the etymology of vampires in general, a phallic snake down the throat seems fairly par for the course.

Right up there with not trusting men who's eyebrows meet int he middle. (Bonus points if you get the reference)

I'm betting it's on Canadian Netflix because we don't get ElRay channel up here.
