I think whoever said it upthread that Season 2 (if it happens) will be a modified Wishsong that won't feature a time jump and will be retrofit for feature Wil and Eretria was right.

That makes me kind of sad...I thought the time jumps for the next few books could bring new generational life to the show.

Anyways, not a terrible finale...but I agre with you Falcon....the Roc was the FIRST thing I thought of when they needed to cross the army. But yeah I think it all came down to budget restraints.

I think that was (the former) Worry that predicted it would go that way. I agree that they'll continue on with Will and Eretria. I don't think it'll have anything to do with the plot of the Wishsong book, though.

With the entirely fictitious Bandon (Bannon?) still influenced by the Dagda Mor and holding the Warlock sword, they've set up a villain for the next round. I had theorized that he was to become Allanon's heir apparent but that seems not to be the case, unless its going to occur after a salvation and redemption period. The other thing I think the show missed on was delving further into the Elfstones themselves. What they can and cannot do, the differences between the "colors" of them (although we only ever see the blue seeker stones in the series, that I recall) and Wil's struggle to use/master them because of his thinned Elven blood and confidence in himself. Its another major plot point in the book that got little play.

Yeah it seems like the introduction of Bandon as a new baddie, that he will be the one who grabs the Ildatch from WISHSONG. But if I'm really honest, I'm kinda done with Wil and Eretria. There is not enough meat there for me to care...and I think that Butler had FAR more chemistry with Drayton than he did with Baraqel in the end...so them being together by default of Amberle not being around anymore feels more forced than it did in the books (where there really was no love triangle at all...Amberle was too focused on her Chosen role).

If they do go on, I'd like to see some Leahs, and perhaps the inkling of Walker Boh coming down the pipe. Allanon is cool and all, but rebuild SOME of the druid order man!

And Arborlon needs to be more than just the throne room and it's adjoining anterooms. I want to see the elvish houses of the normal's amongst the trees ect....and Shady Vale needs to be more than one friggin lonely house on a mountainside. It should be more like Hobbiton.

They may have been able to handle the chemistry issues better, at least at the end, had they chosen to keep Eretria with Wil and Amberle and essentially take a backseat to Wil's and Amberle's relationship. Then, if they had let the gut wrench of Wil losing Amberle happen with no warning and Eretria was just there for him, allowing him to heal, etc,etc...But the whole thing was just too rushed for any of that to be done properly. In the book, there's an epilogue of sorts where Wil gets/takes time for his body and soul to recover and actually heads for home with Eretria by his side. Oh well.

I truly wonder if Terry Brooks is actually happy with what was done? Or is it just worth it to get the exposure/potential new readers (?) and the money that will surely come with it?

I thought the fighting was low budget level decent. It wasn't bloodless like a Hercules fight, at least. Killing off the new king's girlfriend was a little weird though. Who's gonna continue the line now that Dorkus is the only living Elessedil? Also, when someone begs you to kill them out of mercy, it's probably not nice to stab them vertically w/ a broadswoard so they feel themselves gushing blood everywhere.

Anyway, this was 10 40-minute episodes and they did what coulda got done in 2 or 3. Makes you appreciate even season 5 of GoT that much more, despite its flaws. They messed up Dorne, but at least Jaime didn't sneak off to a rave along the way.

Totally agree that the song/musical part of the magic will disappear. I don't see any way these writers (and actors) could make that work on the screen. Between Allanon stating that magic takes a literal physical toll and them not saving the destruction of the Reaper at the Bloodfire as the huge and life-changing (for Wil) breakthrough with the Elfstones, they really muddled the entire magic theme, to me.

Excellent point about Ander and Arion. My thought was the same: what the hell kind of angle was that for a sword strike? Straight through the heart would've been the most merciful.

I've only seen itno S4 of GoT but it CANNOT have stooped to the level of most of Shannara, can it??

Nah. I'm pretty go-with-the-flow with GoT even at its most self-indulgent (except for the rape and white messiah stuff), but Dorne is a genuine screw-up/missed opportunity for the writers. But even its worst writing at least matches Shannarah's best.

With what turned out to be a VERY basic storyline for S1...if it goes to S2 they really need to step up that game.

That said, on FB and twitter, the general consensus from non-book fans is that they loved it throughout.

Soooo, methinks the demographics for this audience are wide and varied..which bodes well for another season, but not for higher-browed storytelling.

I was excited, because I really loved the book every time I read it (when I was 16 and when I was 23-24). The first 2-3 episodes were quite good, but then it completely derailed. Same as Legend of the Seeker basically.
Plot holes and stupidity all over the place, and completely not true to the book.

Major turn-offs:

Killing off Eventine so early
Bannon (the fuck)
that bloody "dome"
Utopia
damn ugly trolls and gnomes
the whole post-apoc world
having the whistle to call a giant bird but not using it when they need to travel across the sea to Safehold or back to Arborlon
but then luckily Arborlon turns out only a "short time" on horseback away (they spent 8 episodes getting there, are back in 5 minutes in the 10th ep)
In the first few episodes there is sometimes mention of how the demons are ravaging the country side, but later they simply do not appear anymore until the last episode. You have also no war refugees in the city, nothing to make the struggle feel real!
The Reaper
All demons looked like fekkin Orcs/Uruk-Hai. In the book no demon is the same, you have very bizarre creatures and sorta Pokemon-like demons...


Something that pissed me off majorly in the last episode was the battle between the demons and the Elves. I may not be Napoleon or something, but when you are the Elvish army and you must defend your tree from the Demon army with a DITCH separating your armies, YOU DO NOT JUMP IN THE GODDAMN DITCH TO BATTLE WITH THEM DEMONS. You set up a defensive line a few feet away from the ditch and let the demons (considering they are Orcs/Uruk Hai anyway) climb up/out of the ditch and then you pick them off. And also, Elves are the greatest archers always and everywhere. I did not see a single archer! What the hell is this?

As for people here claiming they were on low budget... They had a budget of 3,5 - 4 million per episode. Legend of the Seeker for example had only 1,5 million, The Walking Dead has 2,8 million per episode and GoT went from 6 to 8 million per episode.
That's a massive budget and considering all the unknown actors (except the few more known) they could/should have done a lot more imo.

Point being the hate for the former doesn't really carry to the latter any more than nostalgic love for Terry Brookes' work has any real connection to the SHANNARA show.
