Back in 1990, Terry Brooks did an autograph signing at the Waldenbooks I worked at. After he was done I told him

He smiled at me and said some think like, "Thank you, I hear that a lot." He was a really nice guy. Excellent with the fans and staff at the bookstore.

I hear ONLY nice things about Brooks in person. He is apparently a jovial, kind, fan-embracing author.

He came to Toronto WAY back when ARMAGEDDON'S CHILDREN came out (EDIT: Oct. 2006) and I was working so missed the event and I didn't note if he'd been back since...so I'll continue to wait. It will be really nice to meet him and have him sign my hardback first edition RUNNING WITH THE DEMON.

Can we please try and hide book spoilers in a TV thread? I don't particually want to know about a certain character dying (eventually) in a TV show that I am watching when I haven't read the books...

The elf dies.

Saw Ep 4, The Changeling, last night. This show is becoming less and less based on the book with each passing scene. I literally LOL'd when
Spoiler

I'm starting to think that by the end, the only part that will be recognizable from the book will be
Spoiler
Surely THAT cannot be messed with!

Hmmm... I reread the book just last year when it was confirmed the show was coming. I'm almost positive
Spoiler
I could be wrong; my memory is for crap anymore, but I refreshed it less than a year ago.

Its a small detail, all things considered. I promised I'd try to let these things (all the changes) go and I'm clearly failing. Posted Image If I could see the reasoning for it, that'd be one thing...

That's fair. As a fan you're entitled to be nitpicky about those details. :)

For me, I'm actually happy about the changes. Means I'm getting Shannara in TV form and it's different enough to make things not just be "book in TV form" and more of an adaptation...which I feel is nice. It means I get to have the books and the show separately in the fandom. If that makes sense?

I get what you're saying and certainly wouldn't argue against it. And I'm not really a super Brooks fan; I like his books. I have a bit of a soft spot for Sword since it was my introduction to fantasy, but for whatever reason, I love Elfstones by far the most of all his books. It also could be that I'm starting to get "old", lol, and maybe beginning to become one of those crotchety bastards that despises change for change's sake. Who knows.

My daughter just finished Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern yesterday and after watching Ep 4 of Shannara, I handed her the Elfstones book and said, "Take a break from Pern and read this now; I don't want the show ruining the book for you."

Oh yeah for sure. I'm also getting old and getting like that about certain things in the fandoms I enjoy.

Good on you for getting your daughter to read classic fantasy too!

Glad I'm not alone in that old thing!

And yes, I've tried valiantly to get both my kids and my wife to see what a joy reading fantasy can be. My wife read the first three Game of Thrones books, not because of my asking her but because it was coming to HBO. I've tried to get her to read Pern (she loves dragons) but twice the book laid on her night table for weeks untouched. The second time I took it back and gave it to my daughter instead. It took hold of her, so I've got one! My son, ugh, lost cause I'm afraid, at least for now. Damn you PS3 and PS4! In my day, there was Atari and Coleco Vision! Books were way better! (There's that crotchety bastard again...)

That just means the elf has been dead for >30 years.
