I really liked the build up. As a kid I used to watch the 1933 Kong on tv, and without ff or scene selection or any of that, the beginning set up seemed to last for ages - but I'd watch it all, waiting for that bit where he first comes crashing through those trees.

Godzilla is the first film I've seen for years that actually managed to replicate that. I like the way Edwards kept using sort of teaser shots throughout; it was a fine balance between showing too much and too little, and I think although it fell on the side of too little, the pay-off was awesome.

Also, he 'directs' giant beasts really well, totally nailing the ground up shots, and the sheer weight of them. Loved the

Saw it with some of the Brisbanite Malazanites. Was good, mostly positive feedback all around.

There were a few "dumb movie-plot-required moments", but overall it was really good. Was not expecting the presence of the MUTO, so that was a bonus.

I'll give it four iconic Godzilla noises out of five and a half. (Because I have too high standards on realism/things that would solve most of the plots problems in real life.) It was great watching material, and that's all that is really required.

Saw it this aft.

Loved it. Consider this classic Godzilla fan satisfied! All the classic moaves, as metnioned, and the atomic breath, Godzilla returning to the sea ect.

I adored Edwards approach of the slow build, only revealing bits and pieces. You don't see that often in this day and age, what with most movies going for the juggular from the beginning...it's nice to see a flick that does this type of tale with reverence.

Also is it just me or would Edwards be the perfect director of Jeff Vandermeer movels?

Colour me surprised - it would seem my local cinema has actually added Godzilla to their repertoir, starting this Friday. WOOP WOOP!!! I wonder if others have spoken?
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. Saw it the other day. Enjoyed it though I, like many people with glasses, hate seeing it in 3d. I feel like some sort of ocular behemoth in 2 pairs of glasses and no part of it was in 3d as far as I could tell.

Haha, well, they mostly fall on the order of "if these were taken out as factors, the movie would be over in five minutes/without suspense", so I mainly intend them as complaints from the perspective of somebody who knows a bit too much on the side to do the full suspension of disbelief required for those points.

Disclaimer: As above, I liked this film. I wasn't actually horrendously put off by the above things, I just note them in the back of my head because I can't help it. I don't think the film would have been better, or necessarily even viable, if some of them were properly addressed. But that doesn't make it any easier for me to ignore. :p (<- that's mostly for other people, as I'm pretty sure QT knows how my brain works on these things by now. XD)

Saw it only thing i could think about for along time during the movie is that American Ships, tanks and airplanes are EMP shielded.
So that power is almost useless.
They may cut your dick in half
And serve it to a pig
And though it hurts, you'll laugh

I... liked it.
As we say here, it won't rip your ass off, but it's worlds better than the 1998 american attempt to do a Godzilla film. Still, there's problems, the main one being the BARELY SHOWN THE MONSTERS FIGHTING. WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING? MOAR!

Other than that, this was a Godzilla film fair and square. Even if I prefer him as villain and not anti-villain/anti-hero (millenium era ftw), this was surprisingly well done.

JUST GET RID OF THAT BORING SAPPER ALREADY AND SHOW US MORE MONSTERS!

I give it a heartfelt 7/10

Caught this on an IMAX screen(best way to see it by the way). It has it's flaws, but overall, enjoyable. A big, dumb, check your brain at the door, fun summer movie. I was pleased to see they didn't try to redesign the classic Godzilla look. In fact, it, at times, seemed like they were paying homage to the classic Godzilla by conveying the "man in a monster suit" look.

And man, Godzilla must have started his lunch with the raw fish head appetizer and then moved to the deluxe kimchi pizza, with extra fermented kimchi, and then washed the whole thing down with some turnip juice because his breath sure did pack a wallop.

Yeah, thought that was excellent, very Monsters.

Generally thought was enjoyable, looked lovely, great sense of size (e.g. Godzilla emerging form the sea creates tsunamis), cinema had the sound uop nice and loud which was great for all the monster stomping scenes. Human story was meh, but serviceable.

And of course very nice that it was actually faithful to the spirit of the original films instead of being Emmerich's 'let's basically do Jurassic Park meets Independence Day and blame French nuclear testing'. Though i missed the absence of monsters receiving fortuitous power from lightening strikes and saucer people from behind Jupiter who can be defeated with a rape alarm.

Saw it again, this time in 2d.

Made me realise just how much depth and increased impact you get from the 3d... was nice to get shot of the glasses though, and as I went after work to the local cinema instead of the Imax, i had the front row to myself, and it cost me... £4.

Second time round was just as good. Pacing in a film comes down to personal preference, and I like the pacing of this one.. rewatching the likes of Jaws and Jurassic Park, you are kept waiting for the big reveal, and this film nails it.

Loved the nods to the classics... the steamed up window in the rain from JP; the crazy one no one believes from Close Encounters; the fins rising up and use of reflections (and small boy) from Jaws... more curious is the almost identical scene from the '98 Godzilla?

Love that final half hour though. I hope they go all-out with the sequel.

How are you all nitpicking the nukes stuff and just ignoring the Honolulu tidal wave that Godzilla can't actually create?

He's only 350 ft tall and traveling at 40+ knots (maybe 50 mph). There's not enough kinetic energy to make a tidal wave like the earthquakes do.

I really liked this movie despite the dumb/suspension of disbelief-breaking parts. The references to nuclear accidents, natural disasters, human abilities to cope and the sprinkling of sympathy and drive to do better made the Giant Monsters Fight movie really good for what it intended to be.

I think this movie also fails the Bechdel test. Kind of a shame, as Olsen and the nurse lady talk several times - about males. All they need is one friggin' conversation, gotdangit.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I may not have liked the previous movie that much but I can't help looking back and comparing how many things they did right there and did wrong here.

Its the risk of rebooting the Godzilla franchise I guess

To be honest Godzilla scenes were all tough to take in.

Several times they state he was on the hunt but not once did he eat anything. I agree, it felt like there was an excessive amount of poorly thought through scenes but who really cares? I hated Pacific Rim for doing far worse but at the end of the day we got to see giant robots fight giant alien monsters and we just had to roll with it for the spectacle aaaaand this was quite the spectacle.

I told my friend going in all I wanted was a giant radioactive creature delivering a body slam. When the Male MUTO delivered I was happy, the movie could thus do no wrong from that point on.
