I'm very confused, though. This spy business came out of nowhere. I've got utterly no mention of it in my role, and this being a low TMDI which is basically scum versus town, well, I admit that new mechanics belonging to an unaligned faction has me suspicious.

Early on, Uesugi Tomosada had launched probing attacks, seeking weak points in Edo castle's defenses. And truthfully, the castle was not a terribly strong edifice and one which should have fallen quickly. But as the days passed, Tomosada realized that the defenders of the castle were simply fighting with tremendous will and determination despite the loss of their leader. Someone in that castle had a strong tactical mind, and seemed to anticipate where each new attack would commence.
Tomosada grew more and more frustrated and desperate. If he failed to take this castle from his former clan, he would be greatly shamed. Not only for failing at his first command as a general, but for the shame of being beaten by those he had essentially betrayed.
Finally, on this day, despite the wishes of his captains he decided to lead the attack himself. Tomosada needed to prove by example that he was capable of command, and that he would not bow down to the pressures of attacking his former comrades. He needed to forge a new conviction of victory into the hearts of his samurai, who were increasingly disheartened by what they saw as a campaign unnecessarily bogged down, and whose faith in their leader was starting to wane.

As he and his men charged the gates of Edo castle directly, he was surprised to see them open and emit a sortie of Uesugi soldiers. So it was to be single combat on open ground! With a cry he and his men charged forward.

It was an unknown samurai, the leader of the sortie, who delivered the strike which nearly severed his right arm. Stumbling backwards, his soldiers rushed to surround him. Bleeding profusely, face already deathly pale his soldiers made to carry him from the battlefield. But he was not away before he heard that samurai cry out, "That's how vengeance is served, betrayer!"
