First time starting a topic even though I have been getting on here for months for answers, but i can't seem to find out what a Trell is? I mean what race are they? Are they hybrids? And if they are what is the combination? Sorry if this has already been discussed I just can't seem to find the answer anywhere..... By the way I'm new on to Malazan Empire but got say it one of the best sites. Glad to see I'm not the only one who loves these amazing books.

I assume you've read Deadhouse Gates. I don't think it's a DG spoiler but to be on the safe side (as described in the DG Dramatis Personae):
Spoiler

How far in the series are you actually?

Well, somewhere near the middle of DoD, Sanalath muses on the following: "The demons -- Venath, who'd once been allies of the Jaghut. Who gave of their blood to the Trell -- and what a fell mix that turned out to be -- the demons had all vanished into the hole they'd dug." The Venath demons, also called Nacht, being the three that Withal first encountered on the island with the CG's tent/home in MT.

I'm not 100% sure of the meaning of the italic printed sentence between the dashes, but I think it means the Trell are part Venath. The sentence could also mean that Trell are part Jaghut, or both Jaghut and Venath. Me not being a native English speaker, I'm not sure what race "who" is referring to.

From BH,

The Trell homeland seems to be Nemil. They are more like Toblakai and Bhargast than humans.

Quote

Once, long ago, Mappo Runt had stood with a thousand other Trell warriors. Surmounting the Orstanz Ridge overlooking the Valley of Bayen Eckar, so named for the shallow, stony river that flowed northward to a distant, mythical sea Ė mythical for the Trell at least, none of whom had ever travelled that far from their homeland steppes and plains. Arrayed on the slope opposite and down on the riverís western bank, fifteen hundred paces distant, was the Nemil army, commanded in those days by a much-feared general, Saylanímathas.

They are quite an old race but are close to extinct now.

In MT, a race or nation called Sar Trell fought Dessimbelackis at Yath-Ghatan and lost.

Quote

It seemed the night would never end during the war with the Sar Trell. Before the appearance of Our Great Emperor, Dessimbelackis, our legions were thrown back on the field of battle, again and again. Our sons and daughters wept blood on the green ground, and the wagon-drums of the enemy came forth in thunder. But no stains could hold upon our faith, and it shone ever fierce, ever defiant. We drew our ranks tall, overlapped shields polished and bright as the red sun, and the one among us who was needed, who was destined to grasp the splashed grip of the First Empireís truthful sword, gave his voice and his strength to lead us in answer to the well-throated rumble of the Sar Trell warcries, the stone-tremble of their wagon-drums. Victory was destined, in the forge-lit eyes of He of the Seven Holy cities, the fever-charge of his will, and on that day, the Nineteenth in the Month of Leth-ara in the Year of Arenbal, the Sar Trell army was broken on the plain south of Yath-Ghatan, and with their bones was laid the foundation, and with their skulls the cobbles of Empireís road . . .

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Its funny because right after I posted this question i got my answer when I read the exact quote James Hutton suggested, which I think Is correct. Originally I thought they were Jaghut and T'lan. The tusks and skin tone from the Jaghut and the width and other features from T'lan. When Erickson described Icarium and Mappo they were almost exactly the same besides the height and Icarium is Jaghut and Toblakai so its seemed reasonable Mappo being shorter would be Jaghut and the only other semi-human elder race.

I wouldn't think Icarium and Mappo where almost the same. Trell are build much wider than Jagh, while Jagh seem to be a tad longer.

The Malazan Art Guild had a discussion on size and stuff, comparing Gruntle, Dassem, Icarium, Mappo and Karsa. The picture below is what they eventually ended up with.
